Akio Makigawa Australian, 1948-1999 Spirit of Fire 1991 Galvanized steel, fibreglass, epoxy resin and pigments, Provenance: The Private Collection of John and Pauline Gandel Melbourne. Literature: Haig Beck and Jacquie Cooper, Akio Makigawa, no. 86, illustrated Akio Makigawa arrived in Perth from Japan in 1974 with the intention of working as a sail maker. Since boy-hood, sailing had been his first love and he dreamt of one day owning a boat to sail around the world. Makigawa had always enjoyed making paintings and working creatively, however he had not thought of making art a career. His first encounter with sculpture was through the Perth sculptor Tony Jones (born 1944) whom he met through a common interest in sailing. He enrolled in the Claremont School of Art which had a focus on the study of sculpture - here he was introduced to the enormous possibilities within the realm of sculpture. He continued his study of sculpture at the Western Australian Institute of Technology (now Curtin University) and was influenced by the radical attitudes of Terry New and other expatriate British lecturers. Makigawa was drawn to British sculpture more than any other as it ‘was engaged in an attempt to free sculptural form from its dependence on the spatial and emotional logic of the human body.' Makigawa found inspiration from many Australian and international sculptors, however he began to form his own unique feeling towards sculpture which involved the more profound Japanese attitude to material. ‘In Japan, the religious thing is tricky: if you find a stone or the air or a tree that is ‘right' then it can be close to God. I have an approach that is different to the English ‘honesty to materials'. For them material is just material. They are not interested in the spiritual side of material. Even Henry Moore's interest in material goes no further.' In this work, Makigawa shows the influence of modernist sculptors Jean Arp (1887-1966) and Constantin Brancusi (1876-1957) which is often evident, as it is here with this work, particularly the latter's notion of incorporating the idea of different materials into one artwork. Here the red marble effect of upper section contrasts yet seamlessly blends with the cool metal quadripartite base. Makigawa is most well-known for his monumental public commissions. The artist's deteriorating health later in life restricted the amount of work he was able to produce outside of his public commissions, so works of this scale are very rare to the market. AKIO MAKIGAWA, (1948 - 1999), UNTITLED, 1999, stainless steel SIGNED: signed with initials, dated and numbered at base: AK 10 / 1999 / 1/3 DIMENSIONS: 60.0 cm height PROVENANCE: Private collection, Melbourne Bonhams and Goodman, Melbourne, 23 April 2007, lot 680 Private collection, Melbourne LITERATURE: Cooper, J., Akio Makigawa, Macmillan Art Publishing, Melbourne, 2014, cat. 150 (illus.) ESSAY: Monumental in its stillness and poise, Untitled, 1999 is a key work from Akio Makigawa's series on the theme of ‘beginning’ and the genesis of life. Makigawa embraced and explored the allegorical and communicative possibilities of a range of materials, most notably stone and stainless steel. Enchanted by the '‘honesty to materials'’1, Makigawa ingrained in his sculptural work both spiritual presence and structural formality. Tapping into the emotive power of the seed form in its implicit youthfulness and promise, Untitled reflects on the amalgamation of the organic and the machine. ‘'I am looking at the organic and mechanical sides, machine-like. I live in the city and buildings go up. They can grow by emerging or being dropped onto a site by a crane. I am thinking that both ideas, organic and mechanical, can be put together.'’2 Deconstructing the seed to its fundamental geometrical form invites the viewer to see this duality - a motif expressed repeatedly in Makigawa’s later works. Untitled achieves a pensive tranquillity within the raw power of stainless steel. Teetering on a point, the seed’'s smooth and echoed edges are an excellent example of the artist’s characteristic rhythm, enabling the forms to reach a weightless equilibrium. In the same vein as Brancusi, Makigawa embraced notions of the multiple - a reproduction of forms in fluctuating scales and materials. Such an approach liberated the artist from the physical and technical production of a work, allowing him to divert his energy into the lyrical and intangible treatment of the same few forms. Makigawa delighted in the ability to develop an idea organically, turning over his conceptual development to the forces of time. '‘If I think more, maybe I'’ll get a better idea. Time sometimes makes decisions for me.'’3 The artist returned repeatedly to elemental forms including fire, clouds, seeds and vessels, each multiple skilfully imbued with distinct, self-assured charisma. His mature works pay homage to Brancusi, not only in the notion of multiples, but also in their recognition of a sculpture’s base and its ability to independently expand the potential of a work. The basic geometric forms and symmetry of Brancusi’'s Endless Column, 1918 inspired Makigawa'’s pursuit for the timeless and universal symbology achieved in Untitled. Today, sculptures by Makigawa can be found in several state and regional collections including the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra and National Gallery of Victoria, Victoria, complimented by acclaimed public commissions including Time and Tide, 1994 which stands at the Melbourne City Town Hall. Produced in the same year as his untimely passing, Untitled is an outstanding summation of Makigawa’'s oeuvre, demonstrating his masterful treatment of materials and elemental themes. 1. AKIO MAKIGAWA, (1948 - 1999), UNTITLED, 1999, stainless steel SIGNED: signed, dated and numbered at base: AKIO1999 4/6 DIMENSIONS: 117.5 cm height PROVENANCE: Bonhams - Goodman, Melbourne, 24 November 2009, lot 49 Private collection, Melbourne EXHIBITED: Akio Makigawa, Sherman Gallery Hargrave, Sydney, February - March 1999 LITERATURE: Cooper, J., Akio Makigawa, Macmillan Art Publishing, 2014, cat. 150, pp. 469 (illus, preparatory sketch), 496 - 497 (illus., another example), 534 (illus., fig. 150, another example), 561 (illus., another example) ESSAY: ‘As objects, works of art and sculptures, Akio Makigawa’s works have an exquisite symmetry, an assured presence and above all a sublime instinct for the opportunities of material, a quality that is very much in his cultural inheritance.’1 Untitled, 1999 is a captured moment of suspense. Makigawa presents two seed-shaped vessels on the brink of its octagonal base. He purposely rests their sharper side on top of each other instead of being perfectly nestled on their seemingly balanced base. Despite the uncertainty in their placement, Makigawa cleverly presents Untitled, 1999 with flawless balance and a quiet elegance. He alludes a meditative calmness and poise in his figures but its construction required activity and energy as the figures teeter on a single point.2 From 1998 to 1999, Makigawa produced smaller scale sculptures motivated by the theme ‘Beginning’, expressing ideas of life, growth and spirituality. ‘Beginning’, comprising of figures of seeds, bowls, and houses, was Makigawa’s final series of works before his passing in December 1999. Widely known throughout his artistic career for his large scale corporate and public commissioned sculptures, Makigawa took an intimate turn in his solo exhibition crafting universal and personal symbols that would evoke reflection and spirituality. Nine Lives exhibited at Anna Schwartz Gallery in Melbourne encapsulated the peaceful elegance of his brushed steel works featuring life symbols including half-seed pods. The figures spread throughout the gallery floor is described as the ‘most elegant and powerful exhibition ... stripped to a formal essence [like] sculptural haikus.’3 Makigawa’s seed figure was first developed in his oeuvre in the 1980s and has proven to be a signature symbol in his final designs. The treatment of materials plays an important role in Makigawa’s expressions as he uses them to provide a symbolic and yet practical purpose. He has explained that stainless steel represents ‘durability and also expresses a duality of organic and man-made beginnings,’4 The hollow formation of the stainless steel seed further evokes the figure as a vessel of new life and protection. 1.
