Io Makandal Art for Sale and Sold Prices

b. 1987 -

Io Makandal is a South African interdisciplinary artist, working primarily with drawing, photography, organic matter and installation. Her practice is concerned with feminist and environmental embodiments of process, entropy, the binary between nature and artifice, living and dying, urban ecology and hybrid environments during a time of environmental shift.

"Urban ecologies: the cityscape and plantscape, the intersections between artifice and nature and the politics of things and spaces are an inspiration to me. I find those moments, spaces and things within my daily life living in Johannesburg and urban habitats in general. I like this idea of entropy and how certain matter beckons attention, in an object orientated ontological sense." – Io Makandal

Io Makandal was born in Cape Town, South Africa, in 1987. In 2010, she completed her BA degree at Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town, Cape Town, and is currently enrolled as MA candidate at the Wits School Of Art, Witwatersrand University, Johannesburg. The artist has held artist residencies at Kunsthalle am Hamburger Platz, Weissensee, Berlin, DE (2018); NARS Foundation, New York, NY, US (2016); and Ithuba Gallery, Braamfontein, Johannesburg, ZA (2015). She has exhibited both locally and internationally and her work is a part of several private and public collections. Io Makandal lives and works in Johannesburg, ZA.
