          Yusof Majid (b. 1970) Untitled, 2015

          Est: RM9,000 - RM16,000

Yusof Majid is known for his evocative rendition of landscapes that exude mystery and atmosphere. A cherry blossom tree forms the focal point of the landscape, layered with distinctive textures that are refined. The nuanced layers of soft, rustic hues of the earth were applied to emphasize the vastness and airiness of the open space. Yusof Majid attended the Chelsea School of Art in London from 1988 to 1993, where he received his Master's in Painting. He taught Creative Studies at the Lim Kok Wing Institute of Creative Technology. He held his first solo exhibition in Malaysia titled Quiet Concerns at Valentine Willie Fine Art, Kuala Lumpur in 1995. He was awarded the Herbert Read Scholarship in 1993, and the Philip Morris Malaysia Commendation in 1996. His solo exhibition titled The NBD (Nature, Buildings and Daleks) Series was held at Nadine Fine Art in 2018. Est: RM15,000 - RM25,000

Amusing and quirky scenes like this are not a rare sight in Yusof Majid's style of painting. In fact, the series alone features giants still living scattered throughout famous Peninsula Malaysia like the Cameron Highlands, Kelantan River, and many more. As in the scene, we see a giant wok and saucepan floating in the sea. Meanwhile, Penang is well associated with the Paradise of Food which includes all types of cuisines. The painter hypnotised us with a mystical journey that we often thought, “what if this was real?”... The work is from Yusof Majid's solo, Paper Trails, held at his own Pace Gallery (now Nadine Fine Art) in 2011. Yusof spent most of his first 27 years in Britain where he graduated with a BA in Art in 1991, and Master's in 1993. Yusof Majid is known for his quirky almost-British humour of surreal, whimsical situations mostly involving people of Lilliputian size. Less is often more in Yusof Majid's mantra and the diminutive figures receive attention through the juxtaposition of amplified still life. YUSOF MAJID : Storm, 2002

          Est: RM1,000 - RM2,500

Recognising the difficulty of connecting with audiences on abstract grounds, Yusof Majid made the turnaround towards figurative works. For Yusof Majid, the transition began with The Young Steam Train (2004), a work that utilised the enduring theme of childhood and borrowed memories from his own (a childhood fondness for trains). These new works projected innocence and quite simply, joy — indeed, a volte-face the apparent complexity of his earlier compositions and the weighty academics required to interpret them. Instead, there’s a fairytale-like quality and doses of humour, too.

There’s always an ethereal quality to Yusof Majid’s works. He is a product of a Malay-British parentage and hails from a well to do family who had a happy childhood, complete with a comprehensive art education. From an early age, art has been a part of Yusof Majid’s life. He grew up in England, and had an appreciation for art at a young age. Born in 1970, Yusof Majid’s creative work was predominantly inspired by the 1980s. The artist attended the Chelsea School of Art, England from 1988 to 1993. Yusof sees his paintings as a naive surrealist extension of his inner self, emptiness and euphoria in landscapes of memory and dreamscapes. Art comes naturally to Yusof and it’s no surprise that his artistic journey began with his childhood. His imagination may run wild but it is rooted into his exciting childhood experience.

Help! A Buckingham Palace guard has gone astray and found himself by a seaside identified as in Shah Alam. With his absurd long hat and strapped with a bayonet, he looks positively weird and wonky, what with him wearing a ceramic sarong. He stands like a Gulliver, towering over the few miniscule onlookers watching him, like for sport. His mismatch of attire may explain why nobody is running in fear. What does this Colossus want, anyway? This is from Yusof Majid's Peninsular Series, shown in his solo at the then Pace Gallery in Petaling Jaya, in 2013. If artist-gallerist Yusof Majid's works look British, it probably is. He has lived the first 27 years of his life in Britain, where he was born. He graduated with a Master from the Chelsea School of Art in London in 1992, after his BFA in 1991. He decided to move back lock, stock and barrel, to Malaysia in 1995, but took some time before he had his first solo, Quiet Concerns, at the Valentine Willie Fine Art, Kuala Lumpur, in 2003. But his first solo was at the Municipal Hall in Bergerac, France. He has also set up the Darling Muse Gallery, and changed the name to Pace Gallery and then again, Nadine Fine Art. Yusof Majid is known for his facetious look about life in general, using his trademark Lilliputan figures to tell the story. Here, they are shown lining up together and dragging a sleepy-head in a sleeping bag at night all over the valley under the light of the moon and myriad stars. To some, sleep could be something precious and not for the world for they tear themselves from the bed unless they have something important to do.William Shakespeare in his play, Macbeth, hints as much when Macbeth intoned in Act 2, Scene 2:Sleep that knits up the ravell’d sleeve of care,The death of each day’s life, sore labour’s bath,Balm of hurt minds, great nature’s second course,Chief nourisher in life’s feast. The work is from Yusof Majid’s solo, Paper Trails, held at his own Pace Gallery (now Nadine Fine Art) in 2011.Yusof spent most of his first 27 years in Britain where he graduated with a BA in Art in 1991, and Master’s in 1993. He returned to Malaysia for good in 1995, and set up his gallery business which he first named ‘Darling Muse.’ His first solo, however, was in France, at the Municipal Hall in Bergerac.
