Aristide Maillol 1861 Banyuls-sûr-Mer - 1944 Marly le Roy Pomone à la tunique Bronze, black brown patinated. Signed "A. Maillol" in capital letters on the left side of the base. 87.5 × 28 × 20 cm. According to information from Ms. Ursel Berger, this is one of the ten bronzes that were made using the lost wax technique for an edition by the New York gallery Weyhe. It was one of the first editions of ten that were made of a Maillol figure. Monsieur Lorquin, expert and legal successor of Aristide Maillol as well as president of the Fondation Dina Vierny - Musée Maillol in Paris, points out that the present work is probably an edition by Ambroise Vollard. It was produced in large quantities by an unknown caster and should not be confused with a cast by C. Valsuani, as these are always marked with a caster's stamp. From 1895 Maillol began to turn to sculpture. The main theme of his sculptural work was the female nude. In 1892 he joined the artist group Nabis. In the 1890s Maillol turned to making tapestries. In 1903 Maillol gave up making tapestries because of an eye problem. From the mid-1890s he carved small reliefs, which he exhibited at the SNBA (Societé Nationale des Beaux-Arts) Paris Salon in 1896. In 1897 he presented a showcase with terracotta figures there. In 1902, the art dealer Ambroise Vollard presented 33 works by Maillol: tapestries, a wall fountain, the carved cradle of the son and statuettes made of plaster, wood and bronze. He initially made small sculptures out of wood and terracotta, from which he then developed his monumental stone and bronze figures. In addition to drawings, etchings and lithographs, Maillol's graphic work includes woodcuts in particular. An example is the volume of poetry Chansons pour elle. 25 poems by Paul Verlaine, Paris 1939, which was illustrated with 28 woodcuts by Maillol. Maillol was one of the most important illustrators of ancient literature; His series of images for Vergil's Eclogae et Georgica Ovid's Ars amandi are particularly well known. Like his sculptures, his graphic work is characterized by its emphasis on simple lines and contours. Maillol was of great influence on European, especially German, sculpture. Examples of this are the works of the German sculptors Wilhelm Lehmbruck, Georg Kolbe and Arno Breker, who had a studio in Montmartre and learned from Maillol. Constantin Brâncuși and Henry Moore were also inspired by Maillol. In 1902, Maillol first appeared in public with his sculptural works with a major exhibition in the Ambroise Vollard Gallery. He attended the Collège Saint-Louis in Perpignan, where his desire to become an artist emerged. At the age of 20, Maillol moved to Paris to study art. He took part in a drawing course at the École des Beaux-Arts with the painter and sculptor Jean-Léon Gérôme. Gérome said that Maillol belonged in the arts and crafts school. There he took courses in sculpture. After a few months, Maillol returned to the École des Beaux-Arts and was accepted into the class of the salon painter Alexandre Cabanel. He initially earned his living by restoring stucco work. Maillol's recognition grew when Julius Meier-Graefe included him in the influential publication History of the Development of Modern Art in 1904. In the same year the artist met his most important patron, Harry Graf Kessler, for whom he executed some of his major works. In addition to Count Kessler, important international collectors included Karl Ernst Osthaus, Arthur and Hedy Hahnloser, Oskar Reinhart in Winterthur, Johannes Rump in Copenhagen and the Kröller-Müller couple in The Hague. In 1905 he exhibited his first monumental major work, La Méditerranée (“The Mediterranean”) at the Salon d’Automne. His wife Clotilde was the model for it. In France, Octave Mirbeau, Gustave Fayet and Jacques Zoubaloff were his patrons. In 1913, the first solo exhibition of Maillol's work outside of France took place at the Kunstkring Rotterdam. In the same year, Maillol's works were represented in the Armory Show in New York. Maillol's most important exhibitions took place in Berlin in 1928 in Alfred Flechtheim's gallery, in 1933 in the Kunsthalle Basel and as part of an exhibition of French art on the occasion of the 1937 World Exhibition in the Petit Palais in Paris. As a painter, Maillol was modeled on Pierre Puvis de Chavannes and Paul Gauguin, with whom he was acquainted. Some of Maillol's works were shown at documenta 1 (1955) and documenta III in 1964 in Kassel. His father, Arnold Lionel Haskell, 1903-1980, was a British ballet critic who was a joint founder of the Camargo Society in 1930. He was also influential in the development of the Royal Ballet School, becoming the institution’s director in 1946. Arnold Haskell was also an art collector, acquiring 18th and 19th century sculpture and drawings as well as work by contemporaries such as Jacob Epstein. The work has been seen by Olivier Lorquin, President of the Dina Vierny Foundation, who confirmed that it was an overmolding made during the artist's lifetime and not cast by the artist.

Twenty-five (25) Aristide Maillol (France 1861-1944) woodcut illustrations for 'Les Georgiques' by Virgil. Published by Phillipe Gonin. All with estate stamp, five (5) are also numbered 5/20. This PARTIAL SET Includes a portfolio that is also numbered 5/20. Illustrations on rough cut paper measure approximately 13 in. x 9.5 in. Unframed, loose and not glued or mounted. Provenance: Estate collection of William Greenbaum, Gloucester, Massachusetts, Proprietor of William Greenbaum Fine Prints. If lot is absent of a condition report one may be requested via email. Condition report is provided as an opinion only and is no guarantee as condition can be subjective. Buyer must view photographs or scans to assist in determining condition and ask further questions if so desired. Our in-house shipping department will gladly pack and ship any item that fits into a 14x14x14 inch or 30x5x24 inch or equivalent or smaller box/folio if it is not fragile or over 25lbs. We will charge for labor to pack and process based on actual time it takes, actual cost of materials used to pack and actual shipper charges that will include insurance and signature required. Lithographie um 1930, gerahmt Aristide Joseph Bonaventure Jean Maillol, 1861 - Banyuls-sur-Mer - 1944, bedeutender französischer Bildhauer, Maler und Grafiker, hier: 2 Frauen beim Setzen von Pflanzen-Schößlingen, Lithographie, ca. 26,5 x 29,5 cm (Darstellung), l. u. num. 39/75, r. u. sign., unter P.partout im alten Holzrahmen Zum Künstler: Als 20-Jähriger zog Maillol 1881 nach Paris, um Kunst zu studieren. Zuerst nahm er als freier Schüler an einem Zeichenkurs der École des Beaux-Arts teil, der dem Maler und Bildhauer Jean-Léon Gérôme unterstand. Als er ihm nach einigen Monaten seine Zeichnungen vorlegte, meinte Gérome, Maillol gehöre in die Kunstgewerbeschule, in die Maillol daraufhin wechselte. Dort belegte er Kurse in Bildhauerei. Nach einigen Monaten kehrte Maillol an die École des Beaux-Arts zurück und wurde in die Klasse des Salonmalers Alexandre Cabanel aufgenommen. Nahezu zwanzig Jahre lebte Maillol in Paris in großer Armut. Maillols Anerkennung wuchs erst, als ihn Julius Meier-Graefe im Jahr 1904 in die einflussreiche Publikation Entwicklungsgeschichte der modernen Kunst aufnahm. Im selben Jahr lernte der Künstler seinen wichtigsten Mäzen, Harry Graf Kessler, kennen, für den er einige seiner Hauptwerke ausführte. Im Jahr 1913 fand im Kunstkring Rotterdam die erste Einzelausstellung von Maillols Werken außerhalb Frankreichs statt, gezeigt wurden im selben Jahr waren Werke Maillols in der Armory Show in New York vertreten. Die bedeutendsten Ausstellungen Maillols fanden 1928 in Berlin in der Galerie von Alfred Flechtheim, 1933 in der Kunsthalle Basel und 1937 im Rahmen einer Ausstellung französischer Kunst anlässlich der Pariser Weltausstellung im Petit Palais statt. He initially took part in a drawing course at the École des Beaux-Arts as a free student under the supervision of the painter and sculptor Jean-Léon Gérôme. When he presented him with his drawings after a few months, Gérome thought that Maillol belonged at the School of Arts and Crafts, to which Maillol subsequently transferred. After a few months, Maillol returned to the École des Beaux-Arts and was accepted into the class of the Salon painter Alexandre Cabanel. Maillol lived in great poverty in Paris for almost twenty years. Maillol's recognition only grew when Julius Meier-Graefe included him in the influential publication Entwicklungsgeschichte der modernen Kunst in 1904, the same year that the artist met his most important patron, Harry Graf Kessler, for whom he executed some of his major works. In 1913, the first solo exhibition of Maillol's works outside of France took place at the Kunstkring Rotterdam. In the same year, Maillol's works were shown at the Armory Show in New York. Maillol's most important exhibitions took place in 1928 in Berlin at Alfred Flechtheim's gallery, in 1933 at the Kunsthalle Basel and in 1937 as part of an exhibition of French art on the occasion of the Paris World Exhibition at the Petit Palais.
