Signed Maillart Mixed Media Female w/ Flowers, 1960

        Est: $1,700 - $2,550

**Originally Listed At $1000** Jean Denis Maillart (French, 1913-2004), Female Portrait with Floral Headdress, mixed media on Arches paper, ca. 1960 CE, signed in black at lower left. A striking portrait of a woman with an elaborate headdress of colorful spring flowers adorning her coiffure, the blossoms and sandy locks of hair radiating out from her profiled head. Maillart created this original mixed-media work (tempera paint with pastel and charcoal) on Arches paper (with watermark). Size: 30.125" L x 22.25" W (76.5 cm x 56.5 cm) Jean-Denis Maillart was born in Paris and studied at the Institution of Sainte-Croix in Neuilly-sur-Seine, as well as the National School of Fine Arts. Grandson of the painter Diogene Maillart (1840-1926), who won the Grand Prix de Rome in painting, Maillart was a painter, a set designer, and an illustrator, known for his portraits, theater sets (Hebertot Theater, La Scala in Milan, the Paris Opera), and book illustrations, notably "Le Bateau Ivre" (The Drunken Boat) by Rimbaud. He also created frescoes for the Chapel of Blonville-sur-Mer. Maillart had his first exhibition at the Galerie Jean Pascaud in Paris in 1943. He also exhibited at the Salon des Tuileries, the Salon d'Automne, the Galerie Charpentier (1946), Durand-Ruel (1952), and Andre Weil (1960). Maillart traveled to the United States in 1957 and 1961. His works were acquired by museums, including his "Portrait of General Guillaume" at the Gap Museum, "Portrait of Suzy Solidor" at the Museum of Cagnes-sur-Mer, and the "Vainqueur (Winner)" at the Museum of Fontainebleau. Maillart was awarded the Vermeil Medal of the City of Paris in 1982. During his final years, Maillart retired to Normandy, Cabourg - not terribly far from the eleven murals that he painted within the Chapel of Blonville-sur-Mer. Apr. 30, 2014

Jean-Denis Maillart for Odiot Orfevres, a silver parcel gilt mounted smoked...

        Est: £80 - £120

Jean-Denis Maillart (1913- ) for Odiot Orfevres, a silver parcel gilt mounted smoked perspex rectangular playing cards box, circa 1975, with two opened sets of playing cards, 14cm wide The deck was commissioned by the Odiot company in February 1975. He not only designed the figures on the courts, but also the backs and the indices. At the presentation of the deck the Odiot company issued a press statement, that said: "After Dali, Leonor Fini, Cassandre and Picart Ledoux, Jean Denis Maillart has created a luxurious deck of cards for Odiot. The fascination with faces, which he expresses in his portraits, his taste in costume, theatre and poetry are reflected in the Kings, Queens and Jacks...... his regular clients. The unusualness, the picturesque, the symbolism, make it an exceptional deck, that resigns itself to the needs of quality players." Besides the usual green box a luxury edition was offered in a smoked perspex box, with a double face motif on the lid, in silver and gilded silver, also designed by Jean-Denis Maillart, as offered here.
