Signiert, datiert (in chinesischen Schriftzeichen) u. mit dem Siegel des Künstlers versehen. Verso auf der Rahmenrückwand betitelt u. datiert. Das Passepartout verso ebenfalls betitelt. Die Arbeit wird in das in Vorbereitung befindliche Werkverzeichnis der Tochter des Künstlers, Lan Mai, aufgenommen. - Mai Trung Thu gehört ohne Zweifel zu den bedeutendsten Protagonisten moderner vietnamesischer Kunst. Seine bereits zu Lebzeiten vielfach gefeierten Frauenporträts verbinden eindrucksvoll die asiatische und europäische Kunstwelt und stehen sinnbildlich für eine ambivalente Künstlerbiografie zwischen Ost und West. - Als Absolvent des ersten Jahrgangs von 1925 in der vom Franzosen Victor Tradieu gegründete École des Beaux-Arts d'Indochine in Hanoi wurde Mai Trung Thu ein besonderer Zugang zur Kunstwelt ermöglicht. Stark am Pariser Vorbild orientiert, erlernte er einerseits das Malen mit Öl auf Leinwand und europäische Gestaltungsmethoden. Andererseits wurde ostasiatischen Kunsttechniken, allen voran der Seidenmalerei, große Bedeutung beigemessen. Nach erfolgreichem Studienabschluss im Jahr 1930 und mehrjähriger Lehrtätigkeit an der Kunstschule in Hué verließ Mai Trung Thu Vietnam, um im Jahre 1937 an der Pariser Weltausstellung teilzunehmen. - Im Wissen um eine arrangierte Ehe und ein bereits vorgezeichnetes Leben in Vietnam beschloss er zusammen mit den Künstlerkollegen Le Pho und Vu Cao Dam, sich dauerhaft in Frankreich niederzulassen. In seiner neuen Wahlheimat verarbeitete Mai Trung Thu die Erkenntnis, dass er in sein Heimatland nicht zurückkehren würde, mit einem radikalen Wechsel des Mediums, den er für den Rest seiner Künstlerkarriere nicht mehr revidieren sollte: "Als er 1937 in Frankreich ankam, gab Mai Thu Öl auf Leinwand zugunsten von Tusche und Gouache auf Seide auf. Wie die Bekräftigung einer Identität. Eine Technik, [...] die schnell zu einer charakteristischen vietnamesischen Identität wurde, die Nguyen Phan Chanh seinerseits im Land [Vietnam] weiterverfolgen wird und die unter anderem Le Pho und Vu Cao Dam [in Frankreich] nach und nach aufgeben werden." In "Maquillage (Jeune femme au miroir)" stellt er diese eindrucksvoll zur Schau, während er zugleich mehrfach aus seiner ausgeprägten Kenntnis moderner europäischer Kunst zitiert. Die junge Frau, die sich in einem kleinen Handspiegel betrachtend Schminke aufträgt, ist mit der für Trung Thu typischen Einfachheit dargestellt. Übereinanderliegende Ebenen ersetzen die Perspektive, helle Farbflächen verdrängen Schatten und eine realistische Darstellung wird zugunsten einer abstrahierenden abgelehnt. In ihrer Kolorierung referieren die einzelnen Bildelemente weiter auf die Farbpaletten der Impressionisten. - Obwohl sie in ihrer Ausführung an die moderne französische Kunst angepasst sind, entbehren Mai Trung Thus Werke nicht einer gewissen vietnamesischen Melancholie. Ergebnis ist ein einzigartiger Malstil, der den imaginierten künstlerischen Zwischenraum des traditionellen Vietnams und des modernen Frankreichs mit gekonnten Referenzen zelebriert und Mai Trung Thu zu einem der meist gefeierten Künstler aus Asien werden ließ. - Der linke Blattrand mit leichten Resten der früheren Montierung.

Signed in Latin and with Calligraphy, and dated, lower right. Framed. Mai Trung Thu is known for Figure, portrait, still life, genre painting. Despite having lived in France for the majority of his life, Mai Thu retained a strong sense of patriotism and devotion to the mores from his homeland, finding delight in incorporating Vietnamese subject matter to his art. This artist embodies a generation of progressive Vietnamese artists that emerged during the 1930s, including Le Pho and Vu Cao Dam. One of a kind artwork.
