ANTON MAHRINGER* (Neuhausen auf den Fildern 1902 - 1974 Villach)

      Est: €20,000 - €30,000

ANTON MAHRINGER* (Neuhausen auf den Fildern 1902 - 1974 Villach) Landscape of Carinthia, 1936 oil/canvas 64 x 72 cm signed Anton Mahringer, dated 1936 SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 20000 - 30000 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 20000 Anton Mahringer was born in 1902 in Neuhausen auf den Fildern near Stuttgart and became the first student of Anton Kolig at the Stuttgart Academy in the mid-1920s. In 1928, he visited Nötsch, the adopted home of his professor, for the first time. This initial encounter with the Lower Gailtal permanently placed landscape painting at the center of Mahringer's work. Deeply moved by the expansive valley floor, the rugged mountain slopes, and the deep coniferous forests between the Gail River and Dobratsch, Mahringer decided in 1931 to move permanently to Nötsch. In the seclusion and untouched nature, the sensitive painter found both home and inspiration. The distinctive silhouettes of Dobratsch and the Carnic Alps near the Oisternig, along with the nearby villages of Labientschach and St. Georgen, offered him a rich treasure of motifs. Mahringer spent the summer months in a hunting lodge in the Kesselwald, previously used by Franz Wiegele. The painting depicted here appears to have been created directly from the forest, with the view leading over the valley below to the towering mountain range in the background. The artist skillfully employs color perspective, with vibrant greens and browns filling the lower right corner of the composition, lightening and fading with increasing distance. This compositional diagonal creates a sense of balance and tranquility in the painting. Mahringer captures a summer day in the Gailtal, with dazzling sunlight illuminating the landscape. The warm forest floor exudes the scent of earth, inviting one to settle for a while in the shade of the trees. The German-Austrian painter Anton Mahringer is particularly known for his landscape watercolors. Alongside Sebastian Isepp, Anton Kolig and Franz Wiegele, Mahringer is part of the Nötscher circle. He gained his first artistic experiences in painting courses at the goldsmiths' college in Schwäbisch Gmünd. In 1924 he was admitted to the Stuttgart School of Applied Arts. At the same time, he attended the evening act at the Stuttgart Academy in order to prepare for the entrance examination at the academy. A year later he became a student there in the drawing class under Arnold Waldschmidt. On the occasion of a summer excursion by the Academy, Mahringer came to Tyrol for the first time in 1925. At the International Art Exhibition in Dresden in 1926, he was particularly impressed by Max Slevogt and the German Expressionists. An award at the academy enabled Mahringer to travel extensively to Italy. Here he studied the masters of the Quattro and Cinquecento and conducted research on Leonardo da Vinci and Luca Signorelli. In Stuttgart he became the first student in Anton Kolig's painting class. As part of an excursion by Kolig's class, Mahringer visited Nötsch for the first time and met Franz Wiegele there; Mahringer painted his first landscapes. From 1929 Mahringer worked with other Kolig students on the design of the Klagenfurt country house; During this time he met the state curator Otto Demus as well as the writer Max Priker, editor-in-chief Heinz Paller, the art historian Walter Frodl and the poet Andreas Fischer, Mahringer's future wife Regina Peschges and Hans Gassebner. In Rome in 1931 he met François-Albert Viallet and the German painters Werner Gilles and Karl Kluth. This was followed by participation in exhibitions at the Kärntner Kunstverein and the Vienna Secession. Carl Moll is said to have been enthusiastic about Mahringer's contributions. During the Second World War he was a secondary school teacher in Hermagor. He met the painter Anton Steinhart and the art dealer Friedrich Welz. After Wiegele's death in a bomb attack, Mahringer took over Wiegele's studio house in the Kesselwald. After the war, Mahringer, among other things, on the initiative of Vienna City Councilor for Culture Viktor Matejka in the Würthle Gallery. He also received the commission to paint a portrait of Anton Kolig. Mahringer developed a lively international exhibition activity. He painted five landscape paintings for the Austrian Embassy in Ottawa. At the Vienna Festival in 1957, Anton Mahringer, together with Ludwig Heinrich Jungnickel, received an extensive exhibition at the Künstlerhaus Vienna. In 1964, Anton Mahringer received an order from the Österreichische Draukraftwerke (Austrian Drau power plants) to create a large wall mosaic. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid and the buyer's premium. Est: €35,000 - €70,000

Anton Mahringer Blumen am Fenster II 1961 oil on fibreboard; framed 58 x 92 cm monogrammed and dated on the lower left: AM 61 inscribed with a dedication on the lower right: Regina zum 12.5.62 inscribed on the reverse and old numbered label: Blumen am Fenster II / 1961 / 58 x 92 cm / unverkäuflich private property, Germany; private property, Austria Gerbert Frodl and Elisabeth Brandstötter (ed.), Anton Mahringer, Salzburg 2004, WVAM 899 (id.-no. 291), ill. p. 349 The sale of five landscape paintings to the Austrian Embassy in Ottawa enabled Anton Mahringer to finance the construction of a new single-family house with a studio in 1956 in the centre of St. Georgen im Gailtal, a small village situated on a hill to the northwest of the town of Nötsch in Carinthia. From the balcony and window of his workroom, the artist enjoyed a magnificent view of his beloved Carinthian landscape. The view of the silhouettes of the Carnic and Julian Alps, the fruit trees in his garden with St. Georgen’s primary school and church in the background, as well as the characteristic profile of the Dobratsch mountain range in the east, offered Mahringer a treasure trove of motifs from which he drew in abundance. Here, he was able to delve into specific artistic problems and perfect his distinctive painting style of transparency and reductiveness. The location of his studio made it easier for him to study the individual motifs thoroughly at different times of the day and year, as well as to capture the effects of changing light conditions over a longer period of time. The painting "Blumen am Fenster II" ("Flowers at the Window II") from 1961, which depicts the view from his studio window, above pots and boxes planted with colourful flowers, of the magnificent panorama of the Julian Alps, also depicts a very specific natural light scenario, which differs from the first version of the same view (painted in the same year), particularly in its more multifaceted use of colour and more exciting composition. Anton Mahringer (1902-1974), Watercolor, Ulm Cathedral, 1958

      Est: €1,920 - €2,400

Watercolor, charcoal and white chalk on laid paper by 'Hahnemühle' Germany, 1958 Anton Mahringer (1902-1974) - German painter, later resident in Austria Signed and dated lower left 'Anton Mahringer 58' Literature/Catalogue raisonné: Werkkatalog Anton Mahringer, Nr. 764 (Ld.-Nr. 247); Walter Zettl, Anton Mahringer, Salzburg 1972, Nr. 225; Sárolte Dietrich, Das malerische Werk Anton Mahringers 1902-1974, phil. Diss., Wien 1989, Nr. 294 Narrow glazed wooden frame with passe-partout Sheet size: 48.5 x 59 cm Overall dimensions framed: 58.5 x 69 cm Good Condition Provenance: Acquired in 1960 by Dr. Wolfgang Mahringer (nephew of the artist); Private Collection Berlin Picturesque view of Ulm Cathedral in pastel colors, with contours in charcoal and white chalk, which was created during Mahringers stay in Swabia; comparable watercolors by the artist fetch up to 12,000 euros at the international art market This watercolor was created by the German painter Anton Mahringer in 1958. Depicted is a view of the Cathedral in Ulm, executed in pastel colors. The straight contours in black chalk are outlining the architecture and thereby produce a nice contrast to the scenic areas in watercolor. Mahringer undertook many trips through Europe where he found inspiration for the variety of landscapes he predominantly painted in watercolors. In 1958 he stayed in Swabia for a time as the museum Ulm organized an exhibition of his watercolors The watercolor is signed and dated lower left 'Anton Mahringer 58'. The paper is faintly discolored due to age and with some slight creases, mostly in the margin area. Along the edges a narrow strip of white paper was mounted (by the artist?). Verso the margin shows smaller abrasions due to former mount and weak glue residues. Otherwise the colors appear very fresh. Overall, the watercolor makes a good impression. The frame shows slight signs of wear and measures 58.5 x 69 cm. The sheet's dimensions are 48.5 x 59 cm. Anton Mahringer (1902-1974) Anton Mahringer was born 1902 near Stuttgart. He first took art classes at the School for Goldsmiths where he made initial contacts with local artists. In 1924 he was admitted to the Stuttgarter Kunstgewerbeschule and a year later he attended the Stuttgart Academy of Art where he studied under Arnold Waldschmidt and Anton Kolig, whose class he also taught a little later. He devoted himself to mural painting and established his own workshop for mural art at the Academy. Study trips through Europe inspired him to paint numerous landscapes. Mahringer was impressed especially by the landscapes of Max Slevogt as well as the paintings of the German Expressionists. He participated at the exhibition of the Vienna Secession in 1937, where the painter Cal Moll appreciatively commented on Mahringers works. He further participated in several other exhibitions and received the Austrian State Prize for Painting in 1948.
