Initiée par sa mère et sa grand-mère à la peinture, elle prépare ses pigments et peint l’extérieur des maisons. Dr. Mahlangu currently features in Foreigners Everywhere, the main exhibition at the 60th International Art Exhibition, at the Venice Biennale and on show until the 24th November 2024. A major retrospective exhibition of Dr. Mahlangu’s work titled Then I Knew I Was Good at Painting: Esther Mahlangu opened at the Iziko South African National Gallery in Cape Town on 17 February 2024 and ran until 11 August 2024. The exhibition will next be shown at the Wits Art Museum in Johannesburg and will continue on an international tour, with a scheduled stop in the United States in early 2026. In 2023 Dr. Mahlangu held two international solo exhibitions; in London at Almine Rech Gallery and another at Almine Rech, Paris from 15 April to 3 June. COLLECTIONS: The artist is represented in numerous local and international collections, notably, the Jean Pigozzi Collection, Paris; Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, Washington D.C; British Museum, London; Museum of Arts and Design, New York and the Standard Bank Gallery, Johannesburg. Mahlangu, Esther (South African/Ndebele, contemporary), Untitled Ndebele Patterns, 1999, acrylic on canvas, signed and dated (March 20th) along the bottom edge, 22.75 x 23.5 inches, in a white wood floater frame 25 x 25.75 inches. Mahlangu exhibited at the Three Rivers Art Festival, Pittsburgh, in June of 1999, and we believe that this piece was most likely acquired from that show, however we do not have any documentation to confirm this. Esther Mahlangu is a multi-award winning visual artist, and much loved South African cultural ambassador. The bold Ndebele inspired artworks for which she is globally acclaimed grace many of the most respected museums, private, public and corporate collections. Firmly anchored in her traditional Ndebele culture, and choosing to live in rural Mpumalanga, Dr Mahlangu continues to spend considerable time in many of the largest and most modern cities collaborating with museums, art fairs and curators. She is considered a visionary and a disruptor, being the first person to reimagine traditional Ndebele design in contemporary mediums, and she has painted anything from canvas, walls, ceramic pots, sneakers and doors to cars, bicycles, motorbikes and skateboard decks.
