Esther Mahlangu Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1935 -

South African artist Esther Mahlangu learned to paint from her mother and grandmother, in accordance with her people's Ndebele tradition. Esther Mahlangu's abstract paintings begin as freehand sketches, and she concentrates on creating movement and joy. Using Ndebele wall painting techniques, Mahlangu uses a traditional brush made of bundled twigs and feathers. Her experimentation with fluorescent vinyl paints ended prior to her first solo exhibition in South Africa in 2003. At the exhibit, Esther Mahlangu's artwork displayed the natural shades of her early work: tones in rich clay and cow dung. Reverting back to her classic technique paid off, and the exhibition was a success. Esther Mahlangu abstract paintings appear all over the world. Mahlangu has received the Mpumalanga Arts and Culture Award twice, and spends time mentoring young female artists. EN   Born in 1935 in South Africa, Esther Mahlangu is the eldest of a southern Ndebele family. Taught by her mother and grandmother, she learned the art of painting, preparing her pigments and decorating the exteriors of houses. Her work is characterized by repeated geometric patterns, vibrant colors, and the unifying touch of a fine black border, creating a striking contrast against a white background. This is a constant and intricate repetition of geometric shapes that may seem simple at first glance.   In 1989, she was one of two women featured in the Magicians of the Earth exhibition at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. With boldness, Esther Mahlangu successfully blends modernity with tradition, as demonstrated by her African Art Car for BMW in 1994. Her works are part of the Jean Pigozzi Collection and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in the United States. Since the 2010s, she has returned to her native region, where she runs a school for young girls to pass on her knowledge. She has become a guiding and essential figure in South African art. Born in 1935 in South Africa, Esther Mahlangu is the eldest of a southern Ndebele family. Introduced to painting by her mother and grandmother, she prepared her pigments and painted the exteriors of houses. Repeated geometric shapes, vivid colors and a thin black border create a contrast with the white background. It’s a constant, complex repetition of geometric shapes that at first glance appear simple. In 1989, she was one of two women exhibited at the « Les magiciens de la Terre » exhibition at the Centre Pompidou. Esther Mahlangu boldly combines modernity and tradition, as demonstrated by her African Art Car for BMW in 1994. Her works are part of the Jean Pigozzi Collection and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in the USA. Since the 2010s, she has returned to live in her native region and run a school for young girls where she passes on her knowledge. She has become a leading figure in South African art.

Mahlangu, Esther (South African/Ndebele, contemporary), Untitled Ndebele Patterns, 1999, acrylic on canvas, signed and dated (March 20th) along the bottom edge, 22.75 x 23.5 inches, in a white wood floater frame 25 x 25.75 inches. Mahlangu exhibited at the Three Rivers Art Festival, Pittsburgh, in June of 1999, and we believe that this piece was most likely acquired from that show, however we do not have any documentation to confirm this. Esther Mahlangu is a multi-award winning visual artist, and much loved South African cultural ambassador. The bold Ndebele inspired artworks for which she is globally acclaimed grace many of the most respected museums, private, public and corporate collections. Firmly anchored in her traditional Ndebele culture, and choosing to live in rural Mpumalanga, Dr Mahlangu continues to spend considerable time in many of the largest and most modern cities collaborating with museums, art fairs and curators. She is considered a visionary and a disruptor, being the first person to reimagine traditional Ndebele design in contemporary mediums, and she has painted anything from canvas, walls, ceramic pots, sneakers and doors to cars, bicycles, motorbikes and skateboard decks.
