          Antonio Mahilum (1948 - 2008) - Fiesta

          Est: ₱200,000 - ₱260,000

Fiesta signed and dated 1991 (lower right) oil on canvas 30" x 40" (76 cm x 102 cm) PROVENANCE: Private collection, Manila In the 1990s, writer Gilda Cordero-Fernando had asked the painter Antonio Mahilum to do the illustrations for a children’s book adaptation of the Cinderella-esque folktale Mariang Alimango. Although the finished products of the Mariang Alimango series would not come to fruition, they would nonetheless be among the works Mahilum would be most remembered for. The works of Antonio Mahilum, after all, possess a strikingly cinematic sense to them. In his depictions of rural living, he festively captures a total sense of folk collectivity often through wide perspectives and high viewpoints, with the viewer’s eye akin to a camera panning across the bustling crowds laid out across the canvas. Having worked in billboard and movie advertising and producing kartelon in the late 1960s, Mahilum seemed to have acquired a knack for storytelling that brought a refreshing sense of directness to his works. On canvas, the result is a festive mise en scène, alluring with its classic folk rural charm framed in a cinematic still life. (Pie Tiausas)

          Antonio Mahilum (1948 - 2008) - Market Scene

          Est: ₱120,000 - ₱156,000

Market Scene signed and dated 1985 (lower right) oil on canvas 24" x 36" (61 cm x 91 cm) The works of Antonio Mahilum have a startling cinematic quality to them. Having worked in billboard and movie advertising in the 1960s, Mahilum developed an art style with a sense of storytelling that bleeds into his works. This movie-like atmosphere is evident in his 1985 Market Scene. There is no evident "main character" in Market Scene – instead, the piece is a panoramic view of the palengke, giving an equal amount of attention to the women walking about and the children selling sampaguitas. This depiction of the rural scene takes a high perspective as though the viewer is peering from up high from a panning camera in the cinema. Market Scene shows the vibrant provincial life and community that it fosters. In the 1990s, a decade after Market Scene, Mahilum went on to create the illustrations of a book adaptation of Mariang Alimango, a Filipino Cinderella-esque fairytale. Though it will not be published, these pieces became one of his most popular, a series of works that would become ubiquitous to his provincial sensitivities. (Hannah Valiente)

          Antonio Mahilum (1948 - 2008) Town Scene

          Est: ₱100,000 - ₱130,000

Antonio Mahilum (1948 - 2008) Town Scene signed and dated 1993 (lower right) 26” x 58” (66 cm x 147 cm) Known for his crowd scenes of small figures in distinct barrio and market settings, Filipino illustrator and painter Antonio Mahilum is known for his interplay of colors and attention to detail which showcase his fine, assured brushstrokes. Mahilum is also best recognized for his Maria Alimango series which presents the life of Maria (a localized version of Cinderella) created for Gilda Cordero-Fernando Books. He has a lighthearted approach in depicting folk themes and settings, utilizing lighter palettes in his later works. This piece is an exemplification of his familiar “antebellum crowd scenes” rendered from a high viewpoint, presenting the festivity of rural life through charming visualization of a reimagined town scene. Townsfolk is presented with distinct activities, from the one in a crowd to the small groups with interacting individuals. It also shows more colors—a more vibrant palette—in contrast to Mahilum’s earlier works which feature darker tones. Beyond being an intimate portrayal of the peasant life, the artist is able to add character to the folks in an individualized manner of stylized portrayal. Mahilum was employed by billboard and neon sign outdoor advertising company, Racor, and moved to movie display advertising in 1967, producing kartelon theater display and cinema layouts for print advertisements. In 1969, he established his own movie advertising firm with local and foreign accounts. He also worked for Felix Gonzales’ studiocum-gallery in Mabini as a portrait painter, and was an active preacher.

          Est: ₱70,000 - ₱91,000

Tony Mahilum (1948-2008) Barrio Scene signed and dated 1994 (lower left) oil on canvas The art of Tony Mahilum has always borne a light-hearted air — a whimsicality in the busyness, a sense of fulfillment in the toils. In this work, we are welcomed into one of Mahilum’s archetypal landscapes. The streets, teeming with people, exhibit no sense of chaos nor disorder — not a single shroud of gloom nor angst present in the work. In the near-utopic composition, the market scene is lit up with a very Filipino brilliance redolent of the tropical sun. The populace contently, if not happily, enjoying the day’s events as they go about their seemingly perfect lives in the idyll.
