      Brian Maguire (b.1951) Cuban Hero

Brian Maguire (b.1951) Cuban Hero acrylic on canvas signed 'B Maguire' and titled verso h:121  w:209 cm. Provenance: Private Collection Brian Maguire's Cuban Hero is not named or specified but could well be Máximo Gómez. He was a Dominican who built his formidable military reputation in the Spanish army. But having moved to Cuba with his family and retired from the army he switched sides and played a crucial role in Cuba's fierce War of Independence in the late 19th century. Maguire is know for identifying with the underdogs and disregarded, those left without a say. His latest work deal with indigenous people in Amazonia. Aidan Dunne, March 2023

Brian Maguire (b.1951) Two Views of Lovers (1988/'99)

      Est: €4,000 - €6,000

Brian Maguire (b.1951) Two Views of Lovers (1988/'99) oil on canvas signed and dated verso '88/'89 h:185.50  w:127 cm. Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist by the present owner Widely regarded as Ireland's foremost expressionist artist, Brian Maguire's work is motivated by a deep sense of outrage at injustice, be it on a micro or macro level. He is driven to identify with those who are marginalised, silenced, misunderstood and ignored. He also has a strong sense of the inadequacy and difficulties involved in human relations and communication. His Lovers are condemned to a kind of mutual isolation, denied the blissful connection promised in idealised popular narratives.

Brian Maguire (b.1951) Portrait of Anthony Cronin acrylic and crayon on paper signed verso h:57  w:77 cm. Provenance: Private Collection Renowned as an expressionist, politically engaged painter, Brian Maguire is a sensitive portraitist. His work depends on a profound sense of connection with the subject, and that is clearly the case with Anthony Cronin, who was not only a key literary figure but played an important role in cultural politics. As advisor to Charles Haughey he was instrumental in establishing Aosdána and the Irish Museum of Modern Art.
