      Est: R30,000 - R50,000

PETER MAGUBANE, (SOUTH AFRICAN, 1932-): 'WINNIE MANDELA AND PRISCILLA JANA IN HER LAW OFFICE, 1978', SILVER GELATIN PRINT unexamined out of the frame the plate 20,5cm by 30,5cm (2) PROVENANCE Gifted by Winnie Mandela to Priscilla Jana in 1978. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the seller. This photograph was taken when Winnie Mandela, who had been banished to Brandfort, was on her way to visit Nelson Mandela on Robben Island and stopped off at the family's lawyer Priscilla Jana's office. Mrs Jana first began representing the Mandela family in 1975 through the law offices of Ismail Ayob. Shortly thereafter, she opened her own law firm and represented many struggle heroes including the Sisulu's, the Mbeki's and the Mandela's. In 1979, Mrs Jana was banned and it was only in 1983 when the banning orders were lifted that she was and many other were free again. She later become South Africa's ambassador to the Netherlands and then to Ireland. Peter Magubane was a close friend to the Mandela family and began his career as a driver at Drum magazine. Given his first photographic assignment after six months under the mentorship of then chief photographer Jürgen Schadeberg, he went on to document the struggle. He left Drum and was to work for numerous publications such as Rand Daily Mail and later for Time amongst others. His art came at a price: he was beaten, interrogated and banned from photography for five years. He was represented by Mrs Jana during this time. Much like Winnie Mandela and Priscilla Jana, he was prepared to fight and suffer for what he believed in and was rewarded by receiving critical international acclaim as a photographer. He remains to this day one of South Africa's finest photographers.
