William Magrath (1838-1918) Man of the Period Oil on canvas, 33 x 23cm (13 x 9") Signed and dated 1880 The land question was at the centre of Irish politics throughout the 19th Century. The English establishment, prompted by English intellectuals from John Stuart Mill to Wilfrid Scawen Blunt, gradually accepted that continuing unrest in Ireland stemmed from a land ownership derived from the plantations of the 17th Century. Whereas most of the landlords were not individually bad they were trapped in a rotten system and with suicidal short-sightedness used their considerable political influence in England to delay or thwart land reform. Gladstone's conversion to home rule, the formation of the Land League by Michael Davitt behind which Parnell threw his support, American opinion, all contributed to the inevitability of land reform even if the path was never smooth. Man of the Period represents a former peasant tenant farmer now in possession of his land. There is pride and satisfaction as the intelligent man surveys his land, flocks and homestead. It is a hymn to the wealth and contentment possible for Ireland once the land is back in the hands of native small holders.
