Federico de Madrazo y Kuntz Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Lithographer

Federico de Madrazo y Kuntz (9 February 1815 – 10 June 1894) was a Spanish painter.

Born in Rome, he was the son of José de Madrazo y Agudo, the painter and former Director of the Prado Museum. Federico's grandfather on his mother side was Tadeusz Kuntze, a Polish painter. His brothers were Luis de Madrazo, a painter, Pedro de Madrazo, an art critic and Juan de Madrazo, an architect. Among his children were Ricardo de Madrazo, also a painter, Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta and Cecilia de Madrazo who married the great Orientalist artist, Marià Fortuny.[4] The Madrazo family have been described as one of the most important painting dynasties, who literally dominated 19th-century painting in Spain.[5]

He received his first instruction from his father. While still attending the classes at the Royal Academy of San Fernando, he painted his first picture, The Resurrection of Christ (1829), which was purchased by Queen Christina. Not long afterwards he painted Achilles in his Tent, and subsequently presented to the Academy The Continence of Scipio, which secured him admission as a member "for merit".[6]

While decorating the palace of Vista Alegre he took up portraiture. In 1832 he went to Paris, where he studied under Franz Winterhalter, and painted portraits of Baron Taylor and Ingres. In 1837 he was commissioned to produce a picture for the gallery at Versailles, and painted "Godfrey de Bouillon proclaimed King of Jerusalem". The artist then returned to Rome, where he worked at various subjects, sacred and profane. Then he painted Maria Christina in the Dress of a Nun by the Bedside of Ferdinand III (1843), Queen Isabella, The Duchess of Medinaceli, and The Countess de Vilches (1845–47), besides a number of portraits of the Spanish aristocracy, some of which were sent to the exhibition of 1855.[6]

He received the Legion of Honour in 1846. He was made a corresponding member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts on 10 December 1853, and in 1873, on the death of Schnorr, the painter, he was chosen foreign member. Three years after his father left office, he also became Director of the Museo del Prado and president of the Academy of San Fernando. He originated in Spain the production of art reviews and journals, such as El Artista, El Renacimiento, and El Semanario pintoresco. He died in Madrid.[6]

His brother, Luis de Madrazo, was also known as a painter, chiefly by his Burial of Saint Cecilia (1855). Federico's best-known pupils were his sons, Raimundo and Ricardo.

FEDERICO DE MADRAZO Y KUNTZ (Rome, 1815 - Madrid, 1894) and LUIS DE MADRAZO Y KUNTZ (Madrid, 1825 - 1897). "Jesus in the house of Simon the Pharisee", 1842. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Copy of the work "Christ in the House of Simon the Pharisee" in 1737 by Pierre Subleyras (France 1699 - 1749) located in the Louvre Museum. Measurements: 56 x 120 cm, 87 x 151 cm. This oil painting represents the moment in which Mary of Bethany bends down to wash Jesus' feet, in the house of Simon the Pharisee, according to the episode described in the Gospel of Luke. The Madrazo brothers have taken the subject as an excuse to develop a scene full of luxury in its classically inspired architecture, in the description of the food, the hustle and bustle of the servants, and the variety of types and attire. Known to be a woman of bad life, Mary washes the feet of the Messiah with her own tears, then wipes them with her hair. The Pharisee who had invited Jesus then thought that Jesus was a false prophet, since he had not realized the kind of person who was touching him. Jesus then explained to him, with a parable, how he whom you forgive the most, loves you the most. After this, he told the woman that her sins were forgiven. They manage to reflect the scene perfectly, with Simon indignant at the events, Magdalene with her long blond hair drying the Lord's feet, and the Lord showing love to her. The rest of the men seated around the table, in gestures and countenances show their displeasure. Federico de Madrazo, son of the neoclassical painter José de Madrazo, studied at the school of Alberto Lista, in Madrid, and at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando. A precocious painter, he was admitted as an academician of merit in San Fernando at the age of sixteen. In 1832 he went to Paris to study painting with Ingres, a friend of his father. There he acquired a romantic style in the French manner. In 1840 he continued his training in Rome, where he came into contact with the Nazarenes and, in particular, with Overbeck, which reinforced his drawing skills, already important in his style thanks to what he had learned from his father and Ingres. Two years later he returned to Spain, becoming a painter of great prestige, much sought after as a portrait painter by the aristocracy of Madrid. Chamber painter to Queen Isabella II, he was the great official portraitist of the time. His portraits were characterized by the simplicity and naturalness of his models, and by a distant serenity, intimately linked to the romantic feeling. He was also director of the Prado Museum, a position he held, albeit interrupted, for thirty years until his death. He also directed the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando. He developed a brilliant career as a history painter and, especially, as a portrait painter, achieving great prestige in the artistic circles not only in Madrid, but also in Paris and Rome. His production evolves from a painting where the purism of the line and the careful detailing predominate towards a more fluid and spontaneous technique, of greater expressive depth. He is represented in the Prado Museum, the National Museum of the Palace of Versailles, the Museum of Fine Arts of Bilbao, the Lázaro Galdiano Foundation and the Romantic Museum of Madrid, among others. Luis de Madrazo, son of José de Madrazo and brother of Federico and Pedro, enjoyed great prestige in life, being first a professor (professor of Drawing of the Ancient and Ropajes) and then director of the School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving of Madrid, and recognized with honors such as the appointment of commander of the Order of Isabel the Catholic, as well as academic of number of the Real de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. He cultivated religious and historical themes, although he was especially praised as a portraitist. He began his training with his father, and later expanded it at the Escuela de San Fernando, in Madrid. Already in 1845 we find him working, collaborating as an illustrator in "El Semanario Pintoresco". Later he will also work as a draftsman for the "Semanario Pintoresco Español". In 1848 he went to Rome to further his artistic studies at the National Academy of San Lucas and the French Academy of the Villa Medici. In Rome he came into contact with Friedrich Overbeck, through Antonio Solá. From the German romantic painter he received a powerful Nazarene influence, which can be seen from then on in his work. Later he will make a trip that will take him to Paris, Venice, Munich and Berlin, to finally return to Italy in the 1890s, settling in Pompeii with the painters Bernardino Montañés and Francisco Sáinz. He finally returned to Spain to begin his teaching career in San Fernando, and was introduced into the artistic circles of Madrid by his father and his brother Federico. With the latter he collaborated in the Prado Museum. As a painter, Luis de Madrazo devoted himself almost exclusively to portraiture, working for official bodies and also for the nobility. He made known his work, characterized by the purity of lines and the chromatic and luminous sharpness typical of the strictest Nazarene aesthetics, through various competitions and official exhibitions held both in Spain and abroad. Thus, in 1855 he obtained an important success at the Universal Exposition of Paris, and the following year he would win the first medal at the National Fine Arts of Madrid, for his work "Pelayo en Covadonga" (Pelayo in Covadonga). He was also awarded a silver medal at the Franco-Spanish Exhibition of 1864. Luis de Madrazo is currently represented in the Prado Museum, the Royal Academy of History in Madrid, the Lázaro Galdiano Museum in the same city and other outstanding public and private collections. In this portrait of the II Marquis of Viluma, Madrazo shows his artistic quality and skill. In spite of being a work that belongs to an early period of the painter, it is possible to appreciate a great elegance, rotundity and sobriety in the physical and psychological capture of the protagonist. The work follows the models of the time imposed in the portrait genre. Upright and slightly turned in three quarters, the marquis directs his gaze towards the viewer showing pride, but not arrogance. As usual, the background is neutral without the presence of any element that detracts from the main figure, also both the chromatic range based on a palette of dark tones, as well as the lighting used by Madrazo provide greater aesthetic relevance to the protagonist, since the only points of light are his pink face, the collar of his shirt and slightly the sleeve and the glow of the Cross of Calatrava and the Grand Cross of Carlos III, hanging on his chest. The relationship of the protagonist with Madrazo was established through the portrayed's parents; Ángela Ceballos Olarria and Joaquín González de La Pezuela, Marquis of Viluma and Virey of Peru, who had already been portrayed by the artist a year before. Son of the painter José de Madrazo, who was also in Rome at the service of Charles IV in exile, Federico de Madrazo moved with his family to Madrid when his father was appointed painter of Fernando VII's chamber in 1819. Shortly thereafter, the Royal Museum of Paintings was inaugurated, an institution that would be a key element in the life of Federico de Madrazo. During his childhood and youth he visited it frequently with his father, who was in fact responsible for the lithographic establishment of the museum from 1826, and its director between 1838 and 1857.

The son of the influential neoclassical painter José de Madrazo, Federico de Madrazo y Kuntz was born in Rome, where his father served King Carlos IV in exile. He was baptized in St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican and sponsored by Prince Frederick of Saxony. He moved with his family to Madrid when his father became Fernando VII's chamber painter in 1819. But his definitive training as a painter, absolutely cosmopolitan, took place between the two great European artistic capitals of his time, following in the footsteps of his father. In 1842 Madrazo returned to Madrid, where he soon consolidated his courtly career as a royal portrait painter and, aided again by his father's contacts, rose to the position of chamber painter. In 1844 he painted the great portrait of " He also assumed the function of jury in the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts and came to occupy a seat as a senator of the kingdom, accumulating numerous decorations and international recognitions, which are testimony to the repercussions of his power and the enormous fame he achieved throughout Europe. . Portrait of Caballero, Federico de Madrazo y Kuntz (Rome, 1815 - Madrid, 1894), 19th century Spanish school

          Est: €15,000 - €18,000

Oil on canvas. Measurements: 148 x 109 cm, 180 x 109 framed, with period frame. Federico de Madrazo y Kuntz (Rome, February 9, 1815-Madrid, June 10, 1894) was a Spanish painter, specializing in romantic-style portraits. Madrazo painted portraits, especially of the aristocratic and cultural world (Carolina Coronado, Manuel Rivadeneyra, Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, Ramón de Campoamor, the Countess of Vilches, the Marquise de Espeja, General Evaristo San Miguel, Larra) and some paintings. of history, although almost all of these are from his youthful stage. When he settled down professionally, he devoted himself almost entirely to portraiture. He enjoyed great prestige and had various apprentices, such as the French Léon Bonnat and Jean-Léon Gérôme. In the publication The Artist, to whose creation he contributed, he inserted poems and articles, and there he published some engravings. His daughter Cecilia was the wife of Mariano Fortuny and mother of Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo, also a painter. Outstanding in his work are the portraits —excellently made— of Isabel II, from the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts, and that of Queen Isabel's husband, Francisco de Asís, that of King Alfonso XII, that of the former president of the Council of Ministers Juan Bravo Murillo, that of the President of the First Republic Nicolás Salmerón, and those of Ramón de Campoamor and José de Espronceda. As Federico Madrazo had his studio at number 24 on the corner of Jovellanos street, where he lived and died, by municipal agreement, the street received the name of Federico de Madrazo from 1894. It presents faults and perforations. Measurements: 115 x 89 cm; 126 x 102 cm (frame). In this painting Federico de Madrazo transcends the genre of the portrait to give us a testimony of the bourgeoisie of the time, a delicate and courteous image that catches the viewer's eye. As in the rest of his oeuvre, Madrazo emphasised the personality of the sitter, carrying out a psychological study of the model in which he depicts the woman with great distinction and sobriety. He applies a short, precise brushstroke to the drawing, particularly noticeable in the partially bare shoulders of the strict black dress, the pearls around her neck and the fan she holds in her hands. Despite being a monochrome portrait with earthy, black and greenish tones, the artist emphasises the model's pearly skin and the burgundy velvet throne. The son of the neoclassical painter José de Madrazo, he studied at the school of Alberto Lista in Madrid and at the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts. A precocious painter, he was admitted as an academician of merit at San Fernando at the age of sixteen. In 1832 he went on a scholarship to Paris to study painting with Ingres, his father's friend. There he acquired a romantic style in the French manner. In 1840 he continued his training in Rome, where he came into contact with the Nazarenes and, in particular, with Overbeck, which strengthened his drawing skills, already important in his style thanks to what he had learned from his father and Ingres. Two years later he returned to Spain, having become a painter of great prestige, much sought after as a portraitist by the Madrid aristocracy. He was the court painter to Queen Isabella II and was the great official portraitist of the time. His portraits were characterised by the simplicity and naturalness of his models, and by a distant serenity, intimately linked to Romantic sentiment. He was also director of the Museo del Prado, a post he held, albeit on an interrupted basis, for thirty years until his death. He also directed the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts. It presents slight jumps in the painting. Measurements: 101 x 82 cm; 140 x 100 cm (frame). Oval portrait whose protagonist is shown to the spectator through a long bust, and very slightly turned because in spite of his posture, his rigidity stands out, which seems to give him a certain frontality with respect to the spectator. The most notable feature of his figure is his clothing, where we can see the large cross that indicates his membership of the order of Santiago. Proud of his rank, he wears a white cloak which highlights the vermilion of his cross and therefore his social status. Shortly afterwards the Royal Museum of Paintings was inaugurated, an institution that was to play a key role in Federico de Madrazo's life. During his childhood and youth he visited it frequently with his father, who was in fact responsible for the museum's lithographic establishment from 1826 and its director from 1838 to 1857. A precocious painter, Federico de Madrazo joined the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts as an academician of merit at the age of sixteen. During his youth he founded the magazine "El Artista" with his brother Pedro, which was an important Romantic novelty and in which Federico was responsible for the illustrations. The Marquisate of Viluma is a Spanish aristocratic title created by King Ferdinand in commemoration of the victory at the Battle of Sipe-Sipe or Battle of Viluma, which occurred on the 29th November 1815, during the Third auxiliary expedition to Upper Peru, within the Spanish American wars of independence, in which general Joaquín de la Pezuela was victorious. He was also promoted to lieutenant general and named 39th Viceroy of Peru. Carved and gilded wooden frame crowned with the subjects’ coats of arms in carved and polychromed wood.
