Ronald Maddox (British, B. 1930) "Holyroodhouse" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Great Britain 10.5p Holyroodhouse stamp issued March 1, 1978. Over eight hundred and fifty years ago, in 1128, David I of Scotland dedicated Holyrood Abbey to Christ's Rood, or Cross, because of what he believed to be a miraculous escape while hunting in that area. In the early 1500's, James IV built the official palace beside the abbey. Both the abbey and the palace were burned to the ground during the English invasion in 1543. The palace was soon restored, but the abbey remains in ruin to this day. The Palace of Holyroodhouse is best known for the plots and intrigues that were staged there during the reign of Mary Stuart, (Mary, Queen of Scots). One of the most famous is the murder of David Riccio, an Italian musician who had become Mary's closest friend. Mary's husband, Lord Darnley, became extremely jealous of the relationship between Mary and Riccio and led a group of nobles that disposed of Riccio. Today, on the floor of the audience chamber, is a brass tablet marking the place where Riccio's body was discovered. A year later, Darnley himself was found strangled at Holyroodhouse. To the great anger of many Scottish leaders, Mary acquitted and then married the Earl of Bothwell, the man who was suspected of killing Darnley. In later years, Charles II rebuilt Holyroodhouse, designing it in the French style. After the fall of the House of Stuart, in 1714, the palace remained largely unused. But during the twentieth century, the palace has again been favored by British monarchs. Today, it is the official residence of Queen Elizabeth II when in Edinburgh. Image Size: 8.75 x 10.5 in. Ronald Maddox (British, B. 1930) "Caernarfon Castle" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Great Britain 11p Caernarfon Castle stamp issued March 1, 1978. In the thirteenth century, Wales was an unbeatable thorn in England's side. The Welsh people, led by Llywelyn, remained independent by virtue of their spirited resistance against England. In 1282, however, Llywelyn was killed. And the hopes of the Welsh people died with him. Edward I quickly overran north Wales, and a series of mighty castles were built with the intention of dominating the Welsh people physically and psychologically. The Castle at Caernarfon -- the mightiest of these fortresses -- was begun in 1283. Eleven years later, much of the castle was destroyed in an uprising against the Crown. Repair work was immediately set in hand and by 1330 the castle stood much as it appears today. By 1485, Henry Tudor, of Welsh stock, ascended to the throne. The advent of the Tudor dynasty meant that Caernarfon and the other Edwardian castles were no longer needed. But through the centuries, to this day, Caernarfon has remained the supreme surviving example of Medieval architectural flourish, representing everything that modern man's imagination says a castle should be. Small wonder, then that Caernarfon has caught the imagination of writers and painters through the ages. Or that Dr. Johnson, when he saw Caernarfon in 1774, wrote in his diary that its stupendous magnitude and strength surpassed his ideas, for, as he said, he did not think there had been such buildings in the history of man. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Great Britain 2 Edinburgh Castle stamp issue October 18, 1988. Edinburgh Castle dominates the city of Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, from its position high atop basalt cliffs, which themselves drop 270 feet to a grassy valley planted with trees and flowers. The position of the castle can be clearly seen in this artwork; it is viewed from the Castle Gardens, which lie below the mound. The castle's origins go back to at least the sixth century A.D., although the oldest surviving construction -- St. Margaret's Chapel -- is eleventh century. The history of the castle reflects that of Scotland itself, a nation determined to preserve its independence. King Malcolm III (whose father, Duncan, was murdered by Macbeth) first made Edinburgh Castle the royal residence in the late eleventh century. Until the reign of James VI of Scotland (James I of England), it remained the residence of the Scottish monarchy, becoming the scene of many historic events and battles. In 1174, the castle was occupied by Henry II's English forces, although it was returned to Scottish hands in 1186. it fell to England again in 1296, and it was not until 1313 that Robert the Bruce regained control. Mary, Queen of Scots, like many other Scottish sovereigns, used the castle as a place of refuge, and her son (later James VI) was born there in 1566. Edinburgh Castle became somewhat neglected after the seventeenth century, serving only as a fortress occasionally visited by England's monarchs. Today, however, it is an impressive reminder of Scotland's past glories. Image Size: 12 x 14 in. Overall Size: 19.5 x 20.75 in. Unframed. (B11763)

Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Great Britain 13p Hampton Court Palace stamp issued March 1, 1978. Hampton Court is often called the most beautiful palace in Europe. It was the home of British Kings and Queens for more than two hundred years; the scene of the grand entertainments and the tragic personal disasters which make up the history of Great Britain and its monarchs. Hampton Court was first built in the early 1500's by Thomas Wolsey, Lord Chancellor in the reign of Henry VIII and one of the richest and most powerful men in the kingdom. The palace was immense, and furnished with a magnificence surpassing that of a royal residence. In 1529, Wolsey was stripped of all his wealth and power. In a desperate but unsuccessful attempt to regain the favor of King Henry VIII, Wolsey presented the King with Hampton Court, complete with furnishings, tapestries and lush gardens. At the time, Henry was seeking a divorce from Catherine of Aragon. He moved into Hampton Court with Anne Boleyn, his new love, even though they were not yet married. At once he began to enlarge the house, adding a new library and the magnificent Great Hall which still remains. All Henry's tempestuous marriages took place aginst the backdrop of Hampton Court. The lives of Jane Seymour and Catherine Howard were especially tragic here, and it is said that today they both haunt the Queen's apartments. William III and Mary II completely rebuilt and remodeled Hampton Court in the 1690's. Today, it is a grand palace, filled with priceless paintings and relics that echo great scenes in British history. Image Size: 8.75 x 10.5 in. Overall Size: 15.5 x 15.25 in. Unframed. (B05127)

Ronald Maddox (British, B. 1930) "Windsor Castle in England" Original Watercolor painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Great Britain 5 Windsor Castle stamp issued October 18, 1988. Windsor Castle -- located about twenty miles west of London on the River Thames -- is perhaps England's most famous castle, due primarily to the fact that it is the British royal family's chief residence, as well as a stopping point for many heads of state on official visits to Britain. Originally built around 1070 by William the Conqueror, the castle was a Norman motte and bailey with a timber stockade atop a dirt mound. The Round Tower and stone walls were added by Henry II a century later. The artwork depicts the Round Tower, viewed from across the River Thames. Since Henry II's additions, successive monarchs have remodeled and added to the castle. The decorations which adorn much of the interior are the result of George IV's massive redecorations in the 1820's. The Grand Reception Room and Waterloo Chamber are among the most lavish and magnificent rooms in the castle. Used for State receptions and other formal affairs, they -- like others of the State Apartments -- are open for public viewing during most of the year. In 1475, Edward IV began the construction of St. George's Chapel, one of the most magnificent of English churches. In this chapel are buried many monarchs, including Henry VIII, Charles I, and George VI. Today, Windsor Castle stands as an impressive and monumental reminder of the royal family's influence on British life throughout the centuries. In addition, it has remained a favorite residence among various monarchs, including Queen Victoria and the present Queen Elizabeth II. Image Size: 12 x 14 in. Overall Size: 19.5 x 20.75 in. Unframed. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Great Britain 9p Towwer of London stamp issued March 1, 1978. Vast. Overpowering. Aloof from the rest of bustling, modern-day London. The fabled Tower of London stands as a monument to Medieval Great Britain. It is a silent witness to nine hundred years of political intrigue and royal crisis. Bombings, fires and mob violence. Coronation processions and lavish banquets. Torture and daring escapes. Henry VIII, Sir Thomas More, Anne Boleyn, Lady Jane Grey, Elizabeth I and Sir Walter Raleigh are just a few of the historic figures whose fame and fate -- was intimately tied to the Tower. The Tower is dominated by the massive White Tower built by William the Conquerer in 1078. The design, both interior and exterior, is Spartan. Every consideration is subservient to obtaining the greatest possible strength and security. The outer walls vary in thickness from fifteen feet on the bottom to eleven feet at the top story. Many legends and superstitions are tied to the Tower of London, but perhaps one of the most fascinating is the story of the ravens: There have always been ravens in the Tower of London. They have made their homes amid the rising turrets and battlements for centuries, making themselves useful as scavengers. But even after that service was no longer required, their presence was encouraged. For, the legend runs, if the ravens leave, the Tower will fall and the greatness and glory of Britain will fade. Today, six ravens are kept "on the establishment," with their wings clipped so they cannot fly away -- thus ensuring Britain's survival. Image Size: 8.75 x 10.5 in. Overall Size: 15.5 x 15.25 in.
