Eugene Joseph MacSwiney studied drawing and painting at the Cork School of Art and was honored early on with a series of awards for his figurative skills. For a short period he attended the Royal College of Art in London. In 1890, MacSwiney began showing his works at the Royal Hibernian Academy and exhibited several works at the Royal Academy. In addition to working as a landscape painter he also taught in various schools around the county. Eugene MacSwiney is primarily known for his pastoral landscape of the English countryside.

A quite river runs in the foreground, on the left a flock of sheep are grazing on a hilly meadow. The village of Stoke Poges, hidden behind trees and bushes, extends in the background. The silhouettes of a church and some houses can be discerned. With impasto brushwork MacSwiney has captured the rural idyll. Time and time again, the Irish painter rendered the scenery of rural England in his atmospheric paintings. The painting is visually in good condition. It shows slight craquelure and there are four skillfully restored tears in the canvas (glued on the verso). The work is signed and dated lower left ‘Eugene J. M'Swiney 28’. The frame shows some wear. The framed painting measures 35.5 x 51 cm, the stretcher frame measures 25.5 x 41 cm.
