    Carol Brooks MacNeil (American/Illinois, 1871-1944) "Flapping Waves", a fine and rare Art Deco bronze sculpture depicting a scantily clad female swimmer, 1921, the figure signed "C. L. Brooks M.N.", the circular base inscribed "Carol Brooks 1921" and "Roman Bronze Works, N.Y.", h. 15", w. 5-1/2", d. 8-1/2". Provenance: The estates of David and Eula Wintermann. Accompanied by the bill of sale from Janis C. Conner Fine Art, New York, dated August 10, 1981. Carol Brooks MacNeil studied sculpture at the Art Institute of Chicago and assisted Lorado Taft in creating statues for the 1893 World's Exposition. She continued her studies in Paris under the famous sculptor Frederick MacMonnies and, in 1894, married sculptor Herman A. MacNeil. She exhibited and won awards at later expositions.

Rubinstein, American Women Sculptors, Boston, Massachusetts, 1990, p. 115, illustration of another example NOTES Executed circa 1897. Carol Brooks MacNeil, wife of the well regarded sculptor Hermon Atkins MacNeil, was born in Chicago and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and later in Paris under Frederick MacMonnies. She was a member of the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors and exhibited at the National Sculpture Society. MacNeil specialized in creating decorative but useful objects including ash trays, teapots and such as the present work, chafing dishes. In the present work, the three female figures supporting the chafing dish represents the artist and her two sisters.
