Frederick William MacMonnies (1863-1937) French, Oil on Board Wife and Daughter

    Est: $10,000 - $15,000

Frederick William MacMonnies (1863-1937) French, Oil on Board. Intimate portrait of the artists wife Mary and youngest daughter Marjorie. 1 of 2 known examples. Wife and Daughter. Depicting the artists wife and one of their daughters. The daughter resting her head on her mother with her arms around her.  Provenance: The artist’s estate Frederick MacMonnies given to Frank MacMonnies (brother of the artist) by descent to the artists niece JoAn MacMonnies Huber and Don L Huber acquired directly from the Don L Huber estate in Glen Head, New York 2 of the 3 paintings are unarchived works directly from the family's estate, never seen before. 1 work (self portrait) is identified as example 62 in the book catalog raisonne. Overall Size: 28 x 23 1/2 in.  Sight Size: 21 1/2 x 17 1/4 in.  #9480 We accept that these paintings were painted between 1900 and 1910.  Frederick MacMonnies was born in Brooklyn, New York. He was a child prodigy at carving stone. At age 18, he worked in the studio of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, and then persuaded him to become his assistant, keeping models damp and covered, running errands, and cleaning the studio. In the evenings he studied at the Art Students League, Cooper Union, and the National Academy of Design. MacMonnies was one of the first American sculptors to recognize the potential market of the middle class.  After four years of study and work in New York, MacMonnies left for Paris, opting for the more modernist techniques he could learn there over the more traditional sculpture teaching in Rome.  One of his first teachers was Alexandre Falguiere, who had been an instructor of Saint-Gaudens and who injected a degree of contemporary realism into his classical figures. MacMonnies mingled with many upper class American expatriates and met his future wife, Mary Fairchild, a painter. MacMonnies had fame in the United States and Europe in the later half of the 19th century and early 20th century. He occasionally returned to America but lived most of his life as in expatriate in France. Although he chose to live in Paris, many of his public and private sculpture commissions in future years, with the help of Saint-Gaudens and also architect, Stanford White, were in the United States. In Saint-Gaudens' studio, he met many of the wealthy people who shared Saint-Gaudens Beaux-Arts based ideas that art and architecture should be unified in order to create public art in America equal to that of classical antiquity or Renaissance Europe. Among the men that MacMonnies met through Saint-Gaudens who later furthered his career were architects Stanford White and Charles McKim and John LaFarge, decorator of mansions of the wealthy including the Vanderbilts.

Artist Biography: Frederick William MacMonnies was employed in a jewelry shop until working in the studio of Auguste Saint-Gaudens and studied at the National Academy of Design and Art Students League. He then traveled to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and was awarded the Prix d'Atelier. MacMonnies' exhibition and subsequent praise for "Diana" at the Salon of 1889 garnered him acclaim and commissions in Europe and America. The sculptor remained true to his American Renaissance/Classical style approach until his death from pneumonia. Feb. 05, 2023

Frederick W. MacMonnies, 'Bacchante & Infant Faun'. Large Bronze Sculpture, 1894

    Est: $4,000 - $8,000

Signed Frederick W. MacMonnies, 'Bacchante & Infant Faun'. Large Bronze Sculpture, 1894 Signed Frederick William MacMonnies (American 1863 - 1937).  'Bacchante & Infant Faun'. A large antique bronze, incised signature F. MacMonnies, and dated 1894 to base. Also having an incised H. Rouard Fondeur mark to base.  Originally commissioned by Charles Follen McKim, the original bronze bacchante and infant faun, measured 84-inches high. McKim was a partner in the architectural firm mckim, mead & white, who designed the boston public library's central library in copley square. He donated his cast for display in the library's courtyard, but bostonians were shocked at the sight of a dancing, frolicking, drunken nude, and the work was soon removed. Nearly a century later another cast was placed in the courtyard as originally intended. Smaller 33 1/2" casts and smaller 16-inch casts were subsequently made by french and american foundries and were sold by durand-ruel in paris and new york, and by theodore b. starr and tiffany & company in new york. A sculptor of classical figures, american-born Frederick MacMonnies achieved fame both in the united states as well as europe from the late 19th century and into the first half of the 20th century.  In 1880 he began an apprenticeship under Augustus Saint-Gaudens, and was soon promoted to studio assistant, beginning his lifelong friendship with the acclaimed sculptor. He also studied at night at the national academy of design and the art students league of new york. In Saint-Gaudens' studio, he met Stanford White who was turning to him for the prominent sculptures required for his architectural projects. At the recommendation of Saint-Gaudens, he successfully entered the Nathan Hale sculpture competition for city hall park in new york city and had work exhibited at the 1893 world's fair exposition in chicago. His work titled 'The Barge of State', a thirty-eight figure extravaganza, made him nationally famous. In 1884 MacMonnies traveled to paris to study sculpture at the ecole des beaux-arts, twice winning the highest award given to foreign students. In 1888 he opened a studio in paris and began to create some of his most famous sculptures, which he submitted annually to the paris salon. At the paris salon, he was awarded the first gold medal ever given to an american sculptor. Elected to the rank of chevalier in the french legion d'honneur in 1896, he was awarded grand prize at the paris exposition of 1900. This was a decade of enormous productivity and personal satisfaction. A second career as a painter got a good public start in 1901, when he received an honorable mention at the paris salon for the first painting he entered. He remained in france until 1915, when he returned to the u.s. A larger version of this bronze was sold at Sothebys' for $162,000 and a smaller casting realized $18,000 at Rago Arts Auction in 2007.

Note At the age of 17, Frederick MacMonnies served as an apprentice, and later an assistant to the famed sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. In 1884 he traveled to Paris, where he studied at the Académie Colarossi. He briefly went on to study at the Royal Academy of the Fine Arts in Munich, and later at the École des Beaux-Arts with Jean-Alexandre-Joseph Falguière, winning the Prix d’Atelier twice there. One of the most important Beaux-Arts sculptors of his day, MacMonnies was awarded major commissions, including the Columbian Fountain at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, Chicago. Here, the sculptor depicts two figures of Cupid, with an emphasis on naturalism and a playful conveyance of the theme of love. Running Cupid elegantly stands on one foot turned away from the viewer, a bow in hand, having just unleashed an arrow, while Standing Cupid has a bow tucked just by his side, and the index finger of his right hand admonishing the viewer. The latter served as the 1898 model for Cupid, a 16 1/8 inch tall mixed media sculpture comprised of ivory, lapus lazuli, marble, silver alloy, gold, and other materials now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Running Cupid In overall very good condition, with accumulated dust in the interstices and crevices of the sculpture. No evidence of repair or restoration. Some traces of light verdigris scratches locally, for example of the angel's right thigh. Several minuscule dots (likely abrasions) can be see on the putto's face, right extended arm, as well as upper torso, along wiith verdigris marks. Light scuffing at the top of the base. Standing Cupid In overall very good condition, with accumulated dust in the crevices of the work. With a light repair on the angel's inside right ankle (darker shade). Some light scratching on the base, especially visible on the right-hand side. Some evidence of splattering on the globe, towards the front right. With a minuscule dent next to it. Evidence of rubbing along the bottom rim. To request additional information, please email Raphaël Chatroux at rchatroux@freemansauction.com
