Notre vue de la somptueuse façade victorienne de la gare de Cannon Street, aujourd’hui disparue, est un vibrant témoignage de l’âge d’or ferroviaire de Londres, à une époque où les compagnies privées se livraient à une concurrence acharnée. Cette gare, inaugurée en 1866 par la South Eastern Railway, située sur la rive nord de la Tamise, à l’Est de la ville, avait pour vocation de relier la City de Londres et le West End. Non loin, on trouve le siège de la Bank of England et Mansion House, la résidence du Lord Mayor. La façade, dessinée par Edward Middleton Barry (1830-1880), l’architecte du Royal Opera House, d’un style italianisant, abritait un hôtel luxueux, le City Terminus Hotel, inauguré en 1867. Le public ne fut pourtant pas au rendez-vous, et quelques années plus tard, l’hôtel accusait déjà de lourdes dettes, qui ne se s’apurèrent jamais, à tel point qu’il ferma en 1931. Déjà affaiblie par une cessation d’activités lors de la Première Guerre Mondiale, la gare fut la cible des bombardements du Blitz. La campagne de nationalisation des chemins de fer, en 1948, encouragea les autorités à songer à un plan de relance du trafic de cette gare. Dans d’ambitieux travaux de modernisation, en 1962, la façade ancienne fut détruite et remplacée par un colossal rempart de verre et d’acier moderniste, due à l’architecte John Poulson (1910-1993). Notre vue a été reprise en lithographie, comme illustration au supplément du célèbre ouvrage Old and New London (Cassell, Petter & Galpin, London, 1873-1878). La lettre de la lithographie précise « Drawn and lithographed by Maclure & Macdonald », cette importante firme de lithographie qui bénéficiait du titre de « Ornemental printers to the Queen ». 5.000 / 6.000 €

In 1846, he completed one of the earliest series of architecturally accurate drawings of Hong Kong, only five years after its establishment as a British colony. The drawings were published as a set of twelve tinted lithographs, of which the present views are examples.
