      Katharine Hepburns’s "Europa and the Bull" by R.J. McKnight. Robert Johnson MacKnight (American, 1905-1989) deco carved walnut sculpture titled "Europa and the Bull", a stylish depiction of a bull jumping over a C-scroll carved base centered with a relief face of Europa in the front. Unsigned, has remnants of a paper label under the base; 2 repairs to the tail, repair at left rear hoof, age crack centered in base and through figure's face, original finish. Provenance: Sold in Sotheby's, New York, 6-10-2004 catalog "The Estate of Katharine Hepburn"; Robert McKnight and Katharine Hepburn were lifelong good friends who met at a Yale dance in 1927, this sculpture was a gift to her that was created for her. Accompanied by 2 photographs of Katherine. "In 1927, Bryn Mawr student Katharine Hepburn met Bob McKnight at a Yale dance and became lovers. Just two years later, in 1929, McKnight was awarded the Prix de Rome as one of the top young sculptors in the United States. This is the actual carving that won him the Prix De Rome, and he gifted it to his muse, Katharine Hepburn. A bronze version of the same is in the Huntington family created Atalaya and Brookgreen Gardens in South Carolina ( considered America’s first public sculpture garden). Lifelong friends, Miss Hepburn posed for McKnight on numerous occasions. This walnut carving is of Zeus in the form of a bull from Greek mythology “Europa and the Bull” which Hepburn proudly displayed in the living room her New York brownstone for half a century”. 14 in. high x 20.5 in. wide x 5 in. deep. Weight: 7.75 lbs.
