He aimed for a kind of innocence of vision, regarding style as something that might get in the way of describing how things were. Which is not to say that he lacked conventional artistic skill: his technique is flawless, his feeling for composition and structure quite clear.

Provenance: Private Collection Slemish mountain looks volcanic, and it is in fact a volcano, luckily extinct. It was Saint Patrick's first experience of Ireland. Having been brought there as a slave, he spent six years on its slopes as a shepherd, and in the tough, isolated conditions he turned to prayer for solace, and eventually escaped. MacIntyre has a modern-day shepherd stand in for the Saint in a charming spring landscape.
