Multi-piece cast bronze with patina, marble France, mid-19th century Paul Émile Machault (1800-1866) - French sculptor Signed in the cast with 'P. Machault' on the plinth Foundry mark 'Gautier Éditeur' to the side of the plinth A lying and a standing putto set on oval naturalistic plinth, feeding a hen and two little chicks with grain; mounted on an oval and profiled marble base Overall dimensions, including the base: circa 60 x 60 x 48 cm Very good condition Typical charming putti group by the French sculptor Paul Émile Machault. The current highest auction record for a similar bronze by Machault is circa €8,000 The present bronze is the work of the French sculptor Paul Émile Machault (1800-1866) and shows a characteristic group of putti. With their voluptuous bodies, their finely worked hair and flowing folds of the loincloths, the putti are very charming. Their movements and postures are depicted enormously vivid: one putto lies on the naturalistic plinth, one leg angled, embracing a chicken with an elaborately worked plumage. Two chicks peck the grain that strews the standing putto with a flowing skirt. The group of figures is mounted on a green-black and white veined marble base. The work is signed in the cast with 'P. Mauchault' on the plinth. The edge of the plinth is marked with the foundry mark 'Gautier Éditeur'. The bronze is in very good condition, showing minor wear. The raised arm of the standing putto does not attach properly. The overall height, including the marble base, is approximately 60 x 60 x 48 cm. Paul Émile Machault (1800-1866) Born in Paris, the sculptor Paul Émile Machault was a successor to Guillaume Francin (1741-1830). His son, Francois Paul Machault (1835-1874/78), was also a sculptor and medalist. Machault is recorded mainly for his bronze figures depicting groups of putti.
