David Mach Sold at Auction Prices

Sculptor, b. 1956 -

David Mach RA (born 18 March 1956) is a Scottish sculptor and installation artist.

Mach was born in Methil, Fife.

His artistic style is based on flowing assemblages of mass-produced objects. Typically these include magazines, vicious teddy bears, newspapers, car tyres, match sticks and coat hangers. Many of his installations are temporary and constructed in public spaces.

One example of his early magazine pieces, Adding Fuel to the Fire, was an installation assembled from an old truck and several cars surrounded and subsumed by about 100 tons of magazines, individually arranged to create the impression that the vehicles were being caught in an explosion of flames and billowing smoke.

An early influential sculpture was Polaris, exhibited outside the Royal Festival Hall, South Bank Centre, London in 1983. This consisted of some 6,000 car tyres arranged as a life size replica of a Polaris submarine. Mach intended it as a protest against the nuclear arms race meant to stir controversy. A member of the public who took exception to the piece tried to burn it down; unfortunately, he got caught in the flames himself and suffered fatal burns.

In the early 1980s Mach started to produce some smaller-scale works assembled out of unstruck match sticks. These mostly took the form of human or animalistic heads and masks, with the coloured tips of the match heads arranged to construct the patterned surface of the face. After accidentally setting fire to one of these heads, Mach now often ignites his match pieces as a form of performance art.

Mach has also produced some larger-scale permanent public works such as Out of Order in Kingston upon Thames, the Brick Train (a depiction of an LNER Class A4 steam engine made from 185,000 bricks, which can be seen near Morrison's supermarket on the A66 just outside Darlington)[2] and the Big Heids visible from the M8 between Glasgow and Edinburgh.

A second strand to Mach's work are his collage pieces. Partly as a result of having access to thousands of reproduced images in the magazines left over from many of his installations, Mach began to experiment with producing collages. So far, this has culminated in National Portrait, a 3 m by 70 m collage for the Millennium Dome that featured many images of British people at work and at play.

Mach studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (now a school of University of Dundee), Dundee, Scotland from 1974, graduating in 1979, then at the Royal College of Art, London between 1979 and 1982. Following several shows and public installations, Mach was nominated for the Turner Prize in 1988. Mach was elected Member of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1998 and was appointed Professor of Sculpture in 2000.

Known for their ambitious scale and inventive use of unconventional materials, such as coat hangers, matchsticks, magazines, and shipping containers, Mach's practice explores with turning mundane, industrial objects into striking, imaginative pieces that challenge traditional notions of sculpture. Mach has gained particular acclaim for his pin and matchstick sculptures, which demonstrate his technical precision and his ability to take fragile, ephemeral materials and turn them into robust, unexpected and expressive forms.

David Mach, Tiger Head. Anni '80 del XX secolo circa.

              Est: €2,500 - €5,000

Fiammiferi, colla e sostegno in ferro. cm 21x30x20. Es. 2/6. (1)

(SCOTTISH b.1956-) HEAD Signed and dated '98 on label below chin, matchsticks on a metal base (16cm x 18cm x 11cm (6.25in x 7in x 4.25in)) Footnote: Note: David Mach was born in Fife and studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, Dundee and the Royal College of Art, London. As well as this rigorous artistic training, time spent working on the factory floor and in industrial yards would exert a significant influence in the direction of his artistic output, which was generally realised on an extremely large-scale utilising repeats of ordinary everyday objects. In an interview with the Royal Academy, Mach recalled that ‘in the 1980s I was creating massive installations made up of thousands of magazines. At one show, a guy came up to me and said he had always wanted to buy my work but never could because it was too big;’ on reflection, ‘that was an epiphany for me.’ From then on Mach has worked across scales, still generating ambitious large-scale commissions but also much smaller, more accessible pieces like the Matchhead series. The sculpture Head is a multi-coloured, patterned skull made up of coloured, unstruck matchsticks, probably sourced from Japan. The ordinariness of the component objects, in this case the matchsticks, but often also wire coat hangers, magazine pages, tyres or bricks belies the laborious nature of turning them into the artworks and the visual extravagance of the end result of Mach’s work. Head is visually arresting, a classical skull transformed into a richly-coloured and patterned piece of modernity. The uniformity and repetition of the matchsticks and the symmetry and coherence generated is particularly compelling, with a real tactility, yet the threat of combustion is always present. A skull invokes notions of death and this entire structure is made of items designed to spark flames but it is simultaneously steeped in humour and fun. How could a sculpture made entirely of brightly coloured matchsticks take itself too seriously?

(SCOTTISH b.1956-) HEAD Signed and dated '98 on label below chin, matchsticks on a metal base (16cm x 18cm x 11cm (6.25in x 7in x 4.25in)) Footnote: Note: David Mach was born in Fife and studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee and the Royal College of Art, London. As well as this rigorous artistic training, time spent working on the factory floor and in industrial yards would also exert a significant influence in the direction of his artistic work; generally working on an extremely large-scale and often with repeats of ordinary everyday objects. In an interview with the Royal Academy, Mach describes ‘In the 1980s I was creating massive installations made up of thousands of magazines. At one show, a guy came up to me and said he had always wanted to buy my work but never could because it was too big;’ on reflection ‘that was an epiphany for me.’ From then on Mach has worked across scales; still generating ambitious large-scale commissions but also much smaller, more accessible pieces, like the Matchhead series. Head is visually arresting, a classical skull transformed into a richly coloured and patterned piece of modernity. The uniformity and repetition of the matchsticks, the symmetry and coherence generated is particularly satisfying and compelling, with a real tactility, yet the threat of combustion is always present. A skull invokes notions of death and this entire structure is made of items designed to spark flames and fire the fuel of destruction but it is simultaneously steeped in humour and fun. David Mach, British b.1956- Picture Frame; mixed media, coat hanger sculpture, 160x223x36cm (ARR) Provenance: Private Collection, London. Note: David Mach is a major contemporary Scottish artist whose output consists largely of sculpture and installation pieces. The present piece is a typical example of Mach’s style, with his use of everyday items, in this case coat hangers, in his construction of an artwork recalling his larger scale public installations made out of materials such as car tyres and matchsticks. Another sculpture which Mach made from coat hangers, entitled ‘Arm’s Length’, won the Jack Goldhill Award for sculpture at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 2003. Mach’s work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at a number of locations around the world, such as the Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow, City Arts Centre in Edinburgh, Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Centre, and the Galerie Communale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome, amongst many others.  Please refer to department for condition report This work has it's own purpose built crate
