        MACDONALD, William Alister (1861-1948). "From Flower Point", Zane Grey Fishing Camp - Tahiti. Watercolor on paper. Signed lower left; "W. Alister Macdonald" 5 3/8" x 6 1/2" sheet, 14" x 14 3/4" framed. MacDonald was a watercolorist especially of landscapes and London scenes. He was born in Scotland, the son of a Scottish free church minister. By the 1880’s he was living in London and painted scenes of the city and River Thames. Exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists. In 1925 he made his first visit to the Pacific Islands. living for a while in Paul Gauguin’s house in Tahiti. He had two one-man exhibitions at the Arlington Galleries in Bond Street, organized by his wife, the miniaturist Lucy Winifred Macdonald, in 1935 and 1936; the first showing drawings of the South Seas and the second ‘Prewar Wanderings - watercolors from home and abroad’. Early London scenes were published in ‘Watercolours of Old London’, 1942. He died at Paopao on the island of Moorea. (British Museum).

        William Alister MacDonald (1861 - 1948, British) Watercolour "Westminster". Signed with initials and dated 1911. Frame 32cm x 25.5cm, Picture 14.5cm x 7.5cm. Watercolourist of landscapes, especially of French Polynesia, Europe, Britain and London scenes. Born in Brora, Sutherland in northern Scotland, son of a Free Church of Scotland minister. Started work as a bank clerk in Thurso before moving to City of London branch at Lothbury in 1880. Attended evening classes at St Martin's School of Art under John Parker RWS and with the Gilbert Garret Sketch Club, began painting scenes of the city and along the Thames. From 1892 he exhibited at the Royal Academy and Fine Art Society
