ARTIST: Dennis Lyall (Texas, Connecticut, born 1946) NAME: Kennedy's Speech in Berlin YEAR: 2002 MEDIUM: oil on canvas. Canvas applied to board. CONDITION: Excellent. No visible inpaint under UV light. SIGHT SIZE: 15 x 13 inches / 38 x 33 cm BOARD SIZE: 19 x 16 inches / 48 x 40 cm SIGNATURE: lower right NOTE: This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood Commerative Cover for Old Glory's Proudest Moments postmarked on the anniversary June 26, 2002. The American flag is recognized worldwide as a symbol of freedom. For 45 years following World War II, the concept of freedom was put to the test in a series of confrontations between communist and non-communist blocs of states. One of the most dramatic moments in the Cold War took place in central Europe. In 1961 East German leader Walter Ulbricht ordered the construction of a concrete, stone and barbed wire "antifascist protection barrier" through the heart of Berlin. The real purpose of the Berlin Wall, however, was to prevent a mass exodus of East Berliners from seeking freedom in the West. On June 26, 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy made a historic and rousing speech to a Berlin crowd gathered in the shadow of the somber Wall. Standing on the steps of the Rathouse Sch?neberg, Kennedy denounced the Wall as a vivid demonstration of the failure of the Communist system, an offense against history but also against humanity because it separated people who wish to be joined together. More than a million Germans roared their approval as Kennedy declared, "Ich bin ein Berliner" ... "I am a Berliner." It was one of the most uplifting statements in the history of man, a heartening reminder to a divided Germany that freedom is indivisible, and that when one man is enslaved no one is free. Nearly four decades later, following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on America, Germans flew the American flag and proclaimed, "Ich bin ein Amerikaner" ... "I am an American." After graduating from college, Dennis began his professional career as a commercial illustrator in Houston, Texas, working for a commercial art studio then opening his own studio and working as a freelance illustrator. In the late 1970s, after finding an agent in New York City -- the "mecca" for commercial illustrators at the time -- Dennis moved his family (wife and daughter) to Norwalk, Connecticut, which is about 50 miles outside of "the City." Dennis is familiar with all forms of artistic expression, but most of his finished work is oil on canvas. And he has worked in all genres, including commercial illustration, portraiture, marine- and Western-style painting. His assignments over the years have included portraits of the 39 signers of the U.S. Constitution and more than 40 postage stamps for the U.S. Postal Service. He also has work in many private collections across the country, plus with the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Texas Historical Commission and Northeastern Utilities.

"I am an American." Dennis Lyall (American, B. 1946) "Johns Hopkins" Signed lower left. Original Oil painting on Canvasboard. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. $1 Johns Hopkins stamp issued June 7, 1989. Even though he had little education, Johns Hopkins managed to become a successful entrepreneur. Hopkins, known to his friends as Johnsie, began his lucrative career working for his uncle as a humble grocery merchant. During the recession of 1819, he recognized the advantages of taking whiskey as payment for groceries from people who otherwise could not afford to eat. Both sides benefited from this arrangement -- his grateful patrons turned whiskey into food and he turned whiskey into profit, reselling it under the brand name, "Hopkins' Best."Hopkins uncle disapproved of this business practice. The two men parted ways and Hopkins' business success continued. He feathered his nest with wise investments, and became the largest private stockholder in the fledgling Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. Upon his death in 1873, Hopkins was able to provide generously for his relatives and still bequeath a sizable sum to create The Johns Hopkins University and The Johns Hopkins Hospital. The University, a foundation for research and advanced studies, opened formally in 1876. The medical facility began to operate in 1883, and the Hospital and School of Nursing opened its doors in 1889. The School of Medicine, from the beginning closely linked with the Hospital, opened in 1893. All this thanks to Johns Hopkins, who, though lacking in education himself, left his riches to be used in founding a prestigious institution for higher education. Image Size: 16.75 x 14.5 in. Overall Size: 17.25 x 14.75 in. Unframed. (B12003)

For 45 years following World War II, the concept of freedom was put to the test in a series of confrontations between communist and non-communist blocs of states. One of the most dramatic moments in the Cold War took place in central Europe. In 1790, Rhode Island joined the Union -- the last of the original 13 colonies to become a state. The American flag proudly displayed a field of 13 red and white stripes, and 13 white stars on a blue canton. By 1794, two new states had joined the Union -- Vermont and Kentucky -- and Congress voted to add two stars and two stripes, making a 15-stars-and-stripes flag. By 1817, five more states had joined the Union. The flag would be too cluttered if a star and stripe were added for each new state, making a 20-stars-and-stripes design. Navy captain and hero of the War of 1812, Samuel Chester Reid proposed a flag design comprising 13 alternate red and white stripes, representing the 13 original colonies, and a blue canton with a star for each state. This design would allow Congress to easily add new stars to the flag without altering the overall pattern. On April 4, 1818, Congress voted to accept Reid's flag design. For every new state that joined the Union, a star would be added to the flag on the following July 4th. Because Congress did not specify how the stars should be arranged, flagmakers experimented with various designs. The Great Star flag of 1818 had 20 stars arranged in the form of a five-pointed star. Dennis Lyall (American, B. 1946) "Flag First Praised As "Old Glory"" Signed lower center. Original Oil painting on Canvas. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood Commerative Cover for Old Glory's Proudest Moments postmarked on the anniversary March 17, 2002. The legend of "Old Glory" begins with the War of 1812. The exploits of fast, new naval frigates such as the U.S.S. Constitution or "Old Ironsides", impressed the world, especially residents along America's coastlines. The memory of these magic ships and America's triumphant flag must have been strong in William Driver, a ship's cabin boy born in Salem, Massachusetts in 1803. At the age of 21, Driver was experienced enough to become master of the merchant ship, Charles Doggett. For his birthday on March 17, 1824, his mother and a group of Salem girls presented him with a fine new flag for his ship. There were speeches, and a crowd watched as Captain Driver hoisted his new colors to the masthead. The ship's salute gun banged. Against an azure sky the brilliant, 24-star flag unfurled magnificently. Moved by the poetry of the moment, Driver nicknamed his flag "Old Glory." In 1834, after years of sailing, he retired to Nashville, Tennessee where he proudly displayed the flag at his home. During the Civil War, Confederate sympathizers tried unsuccessfully to confiscate the flag, but Driver and his friends had sewn it into a comforter. Shortly before he died in 1886, the old sea captain reportedly placed a bundle into his daughter's arms, saying "This is my ship flag, Old Glory..." The flag was kept as a family treasure until 1922 when it was placed in the Smithsonian Institution. Carefully preserved, the original "Old Glory" remains an important piece of Americana. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood Commerative Cover for Old Glory's Proudest Moments postmarked on the anniversary June 26, 2002. "I am an American." Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. In 1937, Ronald Reagan made his first Warner Brothers picture, Love Is on the Air. Often cast as the sincere, affable "good guy," he would appear in 53 films over the next few decades, including Knute Rockne-All American (1940), and Kings Row (1942), his most critically acclaimed role. While filming Brother Rat (1938), he became engaged to costar Jane Wyman. Married in 1940, they had a daughter, Maureen, and later adopted a son, Michael. World War II saw Reagan called to active duty in 1942 and assigned to the 1st Motion Picture Unit in Culver City, California. As the war ended, he signed a million-dollar contract with Warner Brothers and in 1947 was elected president of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG). Divorced in 1948, he soon met actress Nancy Davis, a contract player for MGM Studios. On March 4,1952, the couple married at the Little Brown Church in Studio City, California. They had two children, Patricia (1952) and Ronald Prescott (1958). In 1957, they costarred in Hellcats of the Navy, their only film together. As president Of SAG, Reagan was drawn into disputes over Communism in Hollywood, and his political views turned increasingly conservative. In 1954, he became host of the television drama series General Electric Theater. Also named spokesman for the General Electric Company, he toured the country, delivering inspirational speeches with a usually conservative, pro-business message. In 1962, he officially switched to the Republican Party. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 18 x 15 in. Unframed. (B17360)

This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 33c Great Star Flag Classic Collection Series stamp issued June 14, 2000. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 33c Forster Flag Classic Collection Series stamp issued June 14, 2000. The American Revolution began on April 19, 1775, when Minutemen and redcoats engaged in battle for the first time at Lexington and Concord. British general Thomas Gage had ordered his army to secretly destroy an American supply depot at Concord, Massachusetts. When Joseph Warren, a Boston doctor, found out about the plans, he sent patriot leaders Paul Revere and William Dawes to ride the 16 miles from Boston to Lexington on the road to Concord and arouse the colonists. The British army arrived in Lexington at dawn on April 19, 1775. They were met by Captain John Parker and his band of Minutemen on the village green. No one knows which side fired the first shot, but several colonists were killed. The British continued marching toward Concord, where they destroyed the targeted military stores. The shots fired at Lexington had aroused the colonists in the area, who joined the Minutemen and drove the British out of Concord and back to Boston. The Forster flag is a British flag that was reportedly captured by the Minutemen on April 19, 1775 -- the historic day that marked the beginning of the American Revolution. Image Size: 18 x 13 in. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for Old Glory's Proudest Moments postmarked on the anniversary August 3, 2002. The Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the Republic on June 14, 1777, and determined: "White signifies Purity and Innocence; Red, Hardiness and Valor; Blue signifies Vigilance, Perseverance and Justice." The U.S. flag as a symbol of democracy and freedom has remained constant since that day, but its design has evolved to keep pace with the Nation's growth. Likewise, the perception of the importance of the flag as a national symbol has taken time to develop. It took a century for an official flag birthday to come to fruition. Flag Day was first observed in 1877 when Congress asked that all public buildings fly the flag on June 14. The idea caught on, and individuals enthusiastically advocated the regular observance of June 14 as "Flag Birthday." In following years the celebration developed mainly as one involving school children although adults, too, participated. In 1914, U.S. Secretary of Interior Franklin K. Lane delivered a Flag Day address. Inspired by three decades of state and local celebrations, Flag Day was officially proclaimed by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916, but not until 1949 did President Harry Truman sign an Act of Congress designating June 14th as National Flag Day. It took another 17 years for Congress to establish National Flag Week in 1966. On June 14, 2002, Americans everywhere celebrated the 225th birthday of their flag. Image Size: 15 x 13 in. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 37c Uncle Sam stamp issued April 3, 2003. This painting features a particularly whimsical example of 20th-century folk art. Pedaling a high-wheel bicycle a tall and long-leg Uncle Sam patriotically waves a crisply unfurled "Liberty" flag. The bicycle itself is made from cast iron while the wheels are trimmed in oak. Uncle Sam's hand-painted clothing -- appropriately colored in red, white and blue -- is manufactured from tin. Originally consisting of 13 stars and 13 stripes, Old Glory was first modified in 1795, when two more stars and two more stripes were added to reflect the admission to the Union of Vermont and Kentucky. In 1818, after the admission of five more states, the number of stripes was permanently reduced back to 13 to represent the original colonies, while the number of stars was increased to 20 to reflect the current number of states in the Union. Since then one star for each new state has been added to flag on the 4th of July following that state's date of admission. In 1912, an executive order standardized the proportions and relative sizes of the elements of the flag its official overall width-to-length ratio is 10 to 19). In 1934, its exact shades of color were also standardized. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 18 x 15.5 in. Unframed. (B17107)

This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 33c Peace Flag Classic Collection Series stamp issued June 14, 2000. In the decades following the Civil War, the Peace Flag was created to symbolize America's dedication to world peace. One of the first steps in promoting this lofty goal began in 1899, at The Hague, a scenic city in the Netherlands. The Hague Court held its first international peace conference where representatives met to settle international quarrels and prevent war. The purpose of this conference was to codify international law by providing official procedures in mediation, inquiry and arbitration. In addition, delegates hoped to establish statutes to peacefully solve international disputes and promote disarmament. The United States was represented by Ambassador Andrew D. White, former president of Cornell University; Seth Low, president of Columbia University; Stanford Newell, minister to the Netherlands; Captain William Crozier of the U.S. Army; Captain T. Mahan of the U.S. Navy, and GREW. Holls, a member of the New York bar. Although the conference failed to reach agreement on disarmament, it did establish conventions concerning the pacific settlement of international disputes, the rules of land warfare, and the application to naval war of the principles of the Geneva Convention of 1864. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood Commerative Cover for Old Glory's Proudest Moments postmarked on the anniversary April 6, 2002. In the last half of the 19th century, when explorers were popular heroes, a young Robert E. Peary made up his mind that Arctic exploration and reaching the North Pole offered the best hope for achieving similar renown. Many Pole seekers tried to take creature comforts with them, reluctant to live like Eskimos. Some paid for this reluctance with their lives. But Peary was different. He studied how Eskimos lived, figuring to translate their hard-won knowledge into success. For the Arctic is a dangerous place, where ice seems alive under pressure from the tides, the wind and barometric change. Sometimes it breaks apart, leaving ice islands, other times it flows together, grinding and roaring, pushing ice peaks skyward. This fury is accompanied by blizzards and heart-stopping cold. But Peary planned for these phenomena. Finally, in July 1908, aboard the ship Roosevelt, his expedition reached 82 degrees 30 minutes north. Ninety miles further north, they set up base camp on Ellesmere Island, 413 miles from the Pole. On February 28, 1909, a lead group set out followed the next day by the rest in a total contingent of 19 sleds, 133 dogs and 24 men. Many dropped out and returned to camp. In the final 133-mile trek to the Pole only Peary, Matthew Henson and four Eskimos remained. Following a hard push and celestial observation, they found themselves three miles fronm the Pole. One more hard, final effort and on April 6, 1909, they were successful and Peary planted the flag at the top of the world. Image Size: 15 x 12.75 in. Overall Size: 18.5 x 15.75 in. Unframed.
