SIR EDWIN LUTYENS (1869-1944) SET OF TEN ARMCHAIRS, CIRCA 1905 ebonised birch, with horsehair-upholstery, one chair stamped to underside A.M (10) Provenance: Commissioned for the Boardroom of Country Life magazine, circa 1905 Property of Future PLC, removed from the offices of Country Life magazine Roseberys, Traditional Home, 18th August 2022, lot 1 Private collection  Literature:See drawing No. 73, E. L. Lutyens, 17 Queen Anne's Gate, S. W.1 May 1931, for a similar chair designV&A Accession no W.6-1944 Illustrated in a 1931 design, these armchairs were originally part of a set of 21 and installed by Sir Edwin Lutyens for the Board Room of Country Life magazine headquarters. He also designed the building, at Tavistock Street, Covent Garden in 1905. The design of the back references shield-shaped chair back designs by the 18th century cabinet-maker George Heppelwhite. Lutyens’ furniture is noted for its eclecticism and draws inspiration from historical styles, adapting and subtly altering proportions and details to suit his own vision. The chairs in the current lot retain their original horsehair upholstery and ebonised finish. The editor of Country Life, Edward Hudson was a champion and patron of Lutyens. In 1901, Hudson acquired Lindisfarne castle and commissioned Lutyens to transform it into a private residence, he designed and built Hudson's home in Berkshire, Deanery Garden, between 1897 and 1902, before taking the commission for the Country Life headquarters.

    SIR EDWIN LUTYENS (BRITISH 1869-1944)

    Est: £10,000 - £15,000

SIR EDWIN LUTYENS (BRITISH 1869-1944) SIDE TABLE, 1902 oak, with brass fittings, made by William Skull & Son Ltd., High Wycombe 81cm high, 124cm wide, 48.5cm deep (32in high, 48 ¾in wide, 19 ¼in deep) Edward Hudson, Deanery Garden, BerkshireWith John Ashton Beer Sir Edwin Lutyens is renowned for his architectural achievements, including Castle Drogo, Little Thakeham, and Campion Hall, as well as his role in designing war memorials for the Imperial War Graves Commission and planning New Delhi. Yet his influence extended to furniture design, where he applied the same meticulous attention to detail and craftsmanship that defined his architectural work.Growing up in the Surrey countryside, Lutyens developed a keen interest in architecture from a young age, spending his childhood sketching buildings and honing his drawing skills. Although illness kept him from public school, his early immersion in construction influenced his later career. By the age of twenty, he had established his own practice in London, combining his architectural knowledge with an intuitive understanding of proportions and spatial relationships that would later shape his furniture designs.Lutyens’ furniture is noted for its eclecticism, drawing inspiration from historical styles but always adapting them in his own distinctive way. While he drew from historical references, he never replicated designs verbatim; instead, he adapted and subtly altered proportions and details to suit his own vision. For example, Lutyens had a particular aversion to "dead proportions," often opting for slight adjustments to standard measurements—either slightly more or less than a half or quarter proportion. The side table offered here was conceived as part of the interior scheme for Deanery Garden in Sonning, Berkshire, a ‘quintessential’ Lutyens property built 1899-1901. The illustrated scale plans of the furniture include annotations naming Edward Hudson, editor of Country Life and Lutyens’ good friend, for whom he designed Deanery Garden. Also mentioned is ‘Skull’, referencing the furniture workshop Walter Skull and Sons Ltd in High Wycombe, commissioned to complete the piece. The design for the set of ladderback chairs after Lutyens offered here is also featured on this sheet. The table’s frieze and drop handles echo 17th and 18th century furniture, influenced by Lutyens' “furniture hunting” with Edward Hudson at Lindisfarne Castle. The bulbous legs, reminiscent of 16th-century refectory tables, are executed with a lighter touch, while the delicately arched stretchers at the base blend 17th-century elements with the Arts & Crafts style, seen also in the work of Sir Robert Lorimer. These adaptations showcase Lutyens’ skill in merging historical references with his modern sensibility and his ability to work closely with craftsmen like Skull allowed him to create furniture that was both aesthetically refined and technically sophisticated.

SIR EDWIN LUTYENS (1869-1944) DOOR FOR LITTLE THAKEHAM, 1902 oak, polished steel (91cm wide, 199cm high, 2.5cm deep) Provenance: Little Thakeham, West Sussex Little Thakeham (the sale of the contents), Rupert Toovey, 18th October 2000, lot 17. Private Collection Literature: Stamp G. Edwin Lutyens Country Houses, Aurum Press 2001, pp.110-115, and p.114 where similar doors to the current lot are illustrated in situ Note: Lutyens once described Little Thakeham in Sussex, which was designed for Ernest Murray Brown and completed in 1902, as 'the best of the bunch'. The exterior of the house is vernacular, as are several features of the interiors including the magnificent doors, found around the house, of which the current lot is one example. However, the house was one of the first in which Lutyens mixed neoclassical architecture into his previously vernacular style, particularly seen in the large hall.

    Est: £600 - £800

SIR EDWIN LUTYENS (1869-1944) SURVEY OF LINDISFARNE CASTLE, HOLY ISLAND MARCH 1902 pencil and wash, inscribed SURVEY OF LINDISFARNE CASTLE, HOLY ISLAND MARCH 1902, later framed (56cm x 78cm) Footnote: Note: Located on Holy Island, near Berwick-Upon Tweed, Lindisfarne Castle was initially built as a fort in 1550, using materials from the island’s priory which was abandoned in 1537. Over the next three hundred years, the fort was transformed into a military station, occupied by soldiers who kept watch over the harbour for any potential attacks. In 1901, on a trip to Northumberland to explore the area, the remains of the fort were discovered by publishing magnate Edward Hudson, owner of Country Life Magazine. He tasked his friend and architect Edwin Lutyens to redesign and refurbish the Castle into an elegant holiday home in the Arts & Crafts style. The work was completed in 1912 and ranged from external work, such as the beautifully cobbled ramp, to major structural interior work: vaulted ceilings, arches, the use of different levels linked by steps and carefully installed fireplaces and cupboards. Throughout the Castle, Lutyens used a variety of materials, including brick, stone, slate and wood to create simple forms and rustic textures that drew upon the castle’s origins, whilst remaining a warm and homely environment for Hudson. In 1911, Lutyens instructed Gertrude Jekyll to design the walled garden, located on the site of a vegetable plot which provided food to soldiers living in the fort some time ago. The present two lots are an initial survey of the castle in 1902 before plans were drawn up for its renovation.

    Est: £100 - £150

Edwin Lutyens (British, 1869-1944) The Archer, hand painted enamelled metal shop sign for Cockington village, 57cm high. In the early 1930's Sir Edwin Lutyens was requested to design an extension to the village of Cockington in Devon, in keeping with the existing picturesque thatched cottages. It was planned to include a country inn, shops and living accommodation. Mainly due to the Second World War, only the village inn was ever built. However, the village shop signs were also made. The signs themselves were made in the old village forge, by the blacksmith, Mr Bill Bradford. Lutyens first grooved out onto a plain sheet of metal the designs and then passed them onto the blacksmith. Using a fretsaw and a drill Bradford painstakingly cut out the designs, before they were sent to be painted.
