Two (2) American etchings by Churchill Ettinger and Huc-Mazelet Luquiens. 1st item: Huc-Mazelet Luquiens (American, 1881-1961) drypoint etching titled "Coral Sea" depicting a scene on a Hawaiian beach with two nude women beneath a group of palms, with strong drypoint burr visible throughout. Signed at dated "H. M. Luquiens, 1929" in plate, lower left. Signed and titled in pencil. Plate: 7 3/4" H x 9 3/4" W. Frame: 16 3/8" H x 18 3/4" W. Note: Born in Massachusetts, Luquiens moved to Hawaii in 1915 and secured a position teaching art at the University of Hawaii. He went on to lead the art department at the university and to found the Honolulu Printmakers printmakers association, which is still active today. Luquiens is best known for his prints of Hawaii, and especially its people and natural splendors. 2nd item: Churchill Ettinger (Vermont/New Jersey, 1903-1984) etching and drypoint titled "Startled Teal" depicting a bird tumultuously rising to flight from its perch upon the water below with marsh foliage and a distant shoreline in the background. Pencil signed "Churchill Ettinger" lower right and titled lower left. Printed informational label and Associated American Artists label affixed, en verso. Housed and matted under glass in a wooden frame. Plate: 10 7/8" H x 8 3/8" W. Sight: 11 5/8" H x 8 7/8" W. Framed: 18 5/8" H x 14 3/4" W.

Signed, Huc-Mazelet Luquiens (1881 - 1961) Titled: "Chinese Scarecrows" 1920 Near Puhala, Oahu, Hawaii Medium: Etching Sight: 7 1/2 x 5 1/2" Overall: 12 x 10 1/4" American Luquiens grew up in New England and went to school at Yale University. After Yale, he continued his studies in Paris and finally came to Hawaii in 1917. In New England, Luquiens had focused his etchings on portraiture and architectural subjects. In Hawaii, he found the landscape irresistible and produced numerous studies which have since attained not only artistic but historical importance as well. Best known as a print maker and teacher who lived in Hawaii during the 1920s and 1930s, Huc-Mazelet Luquiens was also the author, in 1928, of Copper Plate Printing, a pamphlet that was the Honolulu Academy of Arts first publication. Luquiens was a member of the faculty of the University of Hawaii, where, in the 1925-26 school year, art instruction was offered for the first time. He later was named the head of the art department, and was largely responsible for attracting qualified instructors and interested pupils to the University. Among the instructors who joined him at the University of Hawaii were Ben Norris, in 1936, Henry H. Rempel, Millard Sheets, and Frederik Taubes. In April 1928, the Honolulu Academy of Art held a retrospective exhibition of the work of Luquiens, who, during the decade he resided in Hawaii, made 330 etchings, dry points, and aquatints as well as lithographs and wood engravings. He is known for naming the Volcano School of Hawaiian painting the Little Hawaiian Renaissance.

Etching on paper, 7 3/4 x 5 7/8 in., framed. Condition: Not examined out of frame. N.B. According to an ad published in The Yale Literary Magazine, Volume 81, Issue 7, Yale University Press commissioned Luquiens to create a portfolio of eight etchings depicting Yale campus landmarks, which were sold through YUP and the Brick Row Print and Book Shop near campus. The portfolio was published in an edition of 160, with ten hors commerce.

Etchings (the former with aquatint) on paper, plate sizes to 8 3/4 x 12 7/8 in. (22.2 x 32.5 cm), framed. Condition: Toning (primarily to former), not examined out of frames. N.B. Although Luquiens was born in Massachusetts, he traveled to Hawaii for the first time in 1917. Transfixed by the landscape, he spent much of the rest of his career there.
