    Firmado y fechado en el ángulo inferior izquierdo: "J. Luque Roselló / Roma 90". Pérdidas en la capa pictórica. Artista nacido en Málaga en 1865 y falleció en Buenos Aires en 1932. Inició sus estudios en arte en la Escuela de Bellas Artes de Málaga. En 1885 consiguió una beca para seguir sus estudios en Roma. Una vez allí, cayó enseguida bajo la protección de José Villegas, pintor sevillano que ya gozaba en esa época de una sólida reputación, lo que le permitió trabajar contemplando destacados lienzos que éste tenía en esos momentos en marcha. Fue un excelente dibujante y pintor de estilo figurativo que se destacó por el trabajo del cuerpo humano (tal y como podemos comprobar en la pieza que nos ocupa) y por conseguir una vibración luminosa en sus obras. Su trabajo como artista fue acompañado de una intensa labor docente que ejerció en la Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes, el Colegio Nacional y otros establecimientos educacionales. Expuso tanto a nivel local como internacional y recibió numerosas distinciones. Entre ellas se destacan, en 1893, la Medalla de Oro en la Exposición Internacional de Viena y, en 1901, el Primer Premio en la Exposición Internacional de Berlín. Encontramos obras suyas tanto en Museos Nacionales como Internacionales así como en importantes colecciones particulares.

    JOAQUÍN LUQUE ROSELLÓ (Málaga, 1865 - Buenos Aires, 1932). "Allegory of the grape harvest", Rome, 1890. Oil on canvas. Signed, dated and located in the lower left corner. It presents faults, jumps in the painting and restorations. Measurements: 188,5 x 138,5 cm; 190,5 x 141 cm (frame). Joaquín Luque Roselló personifies the grape harvest as a beautiful woman of affable gesture who rests next to a big vat of sherry wine. She holds an empty crystal glass in her right hand and rests a barrel of dry, aged wine on her legs. She wears an off-the-shoulder dress and decorates her head with a crown of grape leaves. Through his personal colourist language, luminous and rich in detail, as can be seen in the rest of the bottles that fill the space, Luque Roselló imbues the work with the flavour of wine, freely recreating mythical times inspired by Ancient Greece. Joaquín Luque was a pupil of Ocón y Rivas and Villegas Cordero at the Malaga School of Fine Arts, and in 1893 he was awarded a scholarship to further his studies in Rome. In 1909 he left Spain to settle in Buenos Aires, where he taught at the National Academy. Before leaving he took part in various official European exhibitions and was awarded the third medal at the National Exhibition of 1887, the gold medal at the Vienna International Exhibition of 1893 and first prize at the Berlin Exhibition of 1901. In America, he held several exhibitions at the Witcomb Salon in Buenos Aires. He is currently represented in the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in the Argentine capital, as well as in various private collections, mainly British.
