SIGNED LUO PIN (1733-1799) China, dated 1772 87,5 x 49 cm Ink and delicate red color on paper, mounted as a hanging scroll. Travelers in a boat in an autumn shore landscape with a maple tree and grasses. An inscription with a poem to the picture, signature: "In the ninth month of the renchen year (1772) at the Yinxiang Studio in the capital written/painted by Liangfeng Daoren Luo Pin" and an artist's seal: "Liang Feng". Two other seals. The inscription indicated that the poem was written on the occasion of this painting by Tanxi (Weng Fanggang, 1733-1818) during their trip to Luo's studio 'Xiangye Caotang' (in Yangzhou). From a European private collection, acquired before 1990 Luo Pin (1733-1799), pseudonym Liang Feng ("Two Peaks") was a Chinese painter of the Qing Dynasty. He studied painting under Jin Nong (1687-1764) and painted people, Buddhist images, flowers and landscapes. He was the youngest of the "Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou" and known for his demon paintings Signs of age, minor wear and soiled, mounting partly damage and repaired

AFTER LUO PING (1733-1799)PLUM BLOSSOMS羅聘梅花長卷林則徐題跋溥儒後跋 Two artist’s seals, ink on paper, preface by Lin Zexu, and postscript by Pu Ru, 12" x 67.5" — 30.5 x 171.5 cm.Provenance:The Scroll Painting Collection of James Clyde Taylor (Lots 73-80) James Clyde Taylor was born in Crewe, Nottoway County, Virginia in 1889, and studied at the University of Virginia before enlisting in the United States Navy in 1917. During his naval career, Lieutenant Commander Taylor sailed aboard various vessels, with his longest service on the USS Gold Star. This vessel left the United States in 1924, and assumed the role of station ship at Guam. During the 1920s and 1930s, Lt. Taylor made frequent voyages upon the Gold Star to the ports of China, Japan and the Philippines, delivering fuel and supplies to the garrisons. It was on these voyages that Lt. Taylor became fascinated with the art and culture of Asia, particularly Chinese paintings. He built his collection over a number of years while travelling on the Gold Star, and also when stationed in Guam with his wife and son. He eventually returned to the United States, but continued to explore Asia throughout his life. His passion for Asian art was contagious, and his collection was passed by descent to his grandson, Robert U. Taylor, who is also a fervent collector. Estimate: $1,000—1,500
