Born in the Black Forest and coming from a humble background Friedrich Ludwig completed an apprenticeship as a decorative painter. From 1922 to 1926 he studied first at the Städelschule in Frankfurt and then at the Académie Julian in Paris. Stays in Zurich, Florence, Berlin and Paris followed. After a painting ban during the National Socialism and further trips abroad, Ludwig settled in Berchtesgaden in 1954. His landscapes, portraits and still lifes are influenced by the color enthusiasm of the French and German Expressionists and show him as an excellent colorist and expressive realist. Only in 1984 the forgotten painter and his work was rediscovered. Since 1999, his works can be seen in the Friedrich-Ludwig-Museum in his birthplace Wieslet.
