      Lucas Luce (Flemish, 1575/76-1677)

      Est: €2,000 - €3,000

Moses strikes water from the rock , signed 'Lucas Luce f' (lower left), oil on panel, 70,5x92,5 cm, Provenance:-In the collection of the family of the present owner for at least 50 years, This is a ‘portrait historié’, a portrait in historical setting. In this case, it depicts a large protestant family portrayed as if they are participating in an Old Testament event. The scene likely refers to the journey to the Promised Land, symbolising their migration from abroad to Holland, where they could freely practice their Reformed faith and drink the clear water of God's Word, hence the reference to water from the rock. Luce and his family were among these Protestant refugees, and left Antwerp for Holland, likely in 1585. It could even be his own family that is depicted, as the young man on the right clearly has the features of a self-portrait.
