Provenance: Finley Collection. Exh.: "Soul Providers: African-American Art from the Finley Collection Original Paintings & Sculpture by Self-Taught Artists", The Ohr-O'Keefe Museum of Art, Biloxi, MS, Jan. 11 - Feb. 22, 2002; "Finley Collection", Natchez Museum of African American History and Culture, Natchez, MS, May 2009 - May 2013; "The John and Pam Finley Collection of African and Folk Art", University of Wyoming Art Museum, Laramie, WY, June 8 - Aug. 17, 2013. Note: Charlie Lucas was born in 1951 in Birmingham, Alabama as one of 14 children. His greatest artistic influence was his great-grandfather, Cain Jackson, a well-known blacksmith in the area. He introduced Lucas to the tools and materials that would “speak” to Lucas decades later. Lucas left school at the age of 14 and traveled in the southeastern United States working odd jobs until he suffered a serious back injury in 1984. After undergoing surgery and a difficult recovery, he began shaping and welding metal together to create sculptures of animals and people. In 1980, he also began painting using house paint on cardboard or plywood and found objects. The subjects of his works are often autobiographical, and his paintings and titles capture the viewer’s imagination. The painting offered here highlights Lucas’s use of bright colors and abstractions, bearing a striking resemblance to works by twentieth century artists Kandinsky and Miro.
