Lu Hao (b. 1969): Great Hall of the People

Bejing-born artist Lu Hao was trained in Chinese ink painting at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in his native city where he became an accomplished and recognized ink painter. The conceptual theme of Lu Hao's work has been his dismay over the destruction of China's ancient cities and the push for modernity propagated by the Chinese government that is in contrast with China's great history. His work after 1997 strives to express these concerns through media other than classical ink drawing, as we can see with his series of monuments constructed out of Perspex. Lu Hao represents a new generation of Chinese artists working to make their voices heard through their art.

L''uvre que nous présentons ici, issue d'une série intitulée Landscape series, fait référence aux métamorphoses de la société chinoise et aux nouvelles réalités urbaines. Lu Hao émet un commentaire social. Avec un sens accru du détail et une maîtrise étonnante, il souligne à travers son sujet le consumérisme, la globalisation et la standardisation des systèmes. Sa technique quasi photographique semble aussi nous parler d'apparences et d'illusions ' Néanmoins, son utilisation de l'encre fait le lien avec la culture classique chinoise. Il lie ainsi le passé et le présent, la tradition et la contemporanéité. Malgré les changements et les pertes, il semble rappeler l'existence et l'importance de la mémoire. Lu Hao (1969) vit et travaille à Beijing. Il est diplômé du Chinese Ink Painting department de la Central Academy of Fine Arts de Beijing. Son travail a été montré dans de nombreuses expositions internationales, notamment à la Biennale de Venise, Biennale d'art contemporain de Lyon, Biennale de São Paulo, Kunstmuseum de Bern, Documenta 12 (Kassel), Singapore Art Museum, Museum für asiatische Kunst (Berlin), Saatchi Gallery (Londres), Deichtorhallen Hamburg / Sammlung Falkenberg (Hambourg), M+ Collections (Hong Kong). Il a été le co-curateur du Pavillon de la Chine à la 53e Biennale de Venise où il monta l'exposition What is to Come. En 2009, Lu Hao a collaboré avec Ferrari pour réaliser le design d'une Ferrari 599 China. Pour ce projet, il a imaginé une carrosserie reprenant les teintes et craquelures d'une porcelaine de la dynastie Song. La pièce unique a été vendue aux enchères en faveur d'une 'uvre de charité.

Born in Beijing in 1969, Lu Hao graduated from the Chinese Ink Painting department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing in 1992. He had become recognised as an accomplished ink painter by 1997, when he began to explore other medium to express his concern about the clash between China’s legacy and the drive to modernity propagated by the Chinese government. The propelling theme of Lu Hao’s artistic career has been his deep dismay at the destruction of China’s ancient cities. Lu Hao is one of a brilliant new generation of artists who represents modern China. Lu Hao’s artworks tightly associate with the transformations and developments of Chinese cities. His works embody the celebration, satire, and mockery of such metamorphosis using plexiglass as the primary material in his installation works. This specific material is often used in the construction of buildings, furniture, and some large format building tools — an association to city developments. The artist has participated in numerous biennales all over the world such as the Venice Biennale, Sao Paolo Biennale, Shanghai Biennale, Lyon Biennale, and Istanbul Biennale.
