    Jun. 14, 2013

Lu Chen (1935-2004), Watercolour & Ink, 'Granddad and grandson"

    Est: €6,400 - €8,000

Watercolour and ink on paper China, 20th century Lu Chen (1935-2004) - Chinese artist of the 20th century Calligraphy, two seals and artist's signature on the upper edge Measurements: 48.5 x 52 cm Very good condition Provenance: from a German collector of Contemporary Chinese Art With a loving gesture, the old man turns towards the smiling boy; they are grandfather and grandson - but as is evident from his straw the man is a farmer, working under intense sunlight in the fields. Possibly he is taking a break and using the time to talk to the child. The watercolour shows an especially expressive brush stroke and restrained colour. Nonetheless, the imagery remains clear, in the tradition of classical Chinese painting. The upper edge shows two red seals and the artist's signature as well as vivid calligraphy. The characters read as a poem about a grandfather teaching his grandson in the skills of cultivation, this type of traditional painting is known as "cultivation-learning- painting". The watercolour is in very good condition with minimal creases. The paper is only slightly wavy, due to having been stored rolled up. The sheet measures 48.5 x 52 cm. Lu Chen (1935-2004) The artist couple Lu Chen (1935-2004) and his wife Zhou Sicong (1939-1996) painted mostly workers, farmers, soldiers and children in the 1960s and 1970s. They usually used ink to produce expressive facial features. Lu Chen was one of the most influential contemporary artists. He created new experimental works with ink, but kept tight to traditional Chinese painting.
