Tom Lovell Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1909 - d. 1997

Tom Lovell (5 February 1909 – 29 June 1997) was an American illustrator and painter. He was a creator of pulp fiction magazine covers and illustrations, and of visual art of the American West. He produced illustrations for National Geographic magazine and many others, and painted many historical Western subjects such as interactions between Indians and white settlers and traders. He was inducted into the Society of Illustrators' Hall of Fame in 1974.

Lovell was born in New York City on 5 February 1909 to Henry S. Lovell Jr, a telephone engineer, and Edith Scott (Russell) Lovell. He was the second of three children.[4] He was a keen reader as a child, and although he received no early training in art he often visited the Museum of Natural History in New York, beginning a fascination with Native American objects and weapons. In 1927 he was the valedictorian of his high school, and at graduation he spoke on "the ill treatment of the American Indian by the U. S. Government." He attended Syracuse University from 1927 to 1931.

Lovell married Gloyd "Pink" Simmons in 1934 and moved to Norwalk, Connecticut. They had two children, David and Deborah.[5] In 1940 Lovell and his family moved to an artists colony at Westport, Connecticut, where he became close friends with Harold Von Schmidt, John Clymer and Robert Lougheed. In 1972 he moved to Santa Fe New Mexico. In 1977 he moved to a seven-acre site in Santa Fe and built an adobe house and studio.

Lovell died in a car crash in New Mexico on 29 June 1997, aged 88. His 48-year-old daughter Deborah was also killed in the accident

Tom Lovell (1909-1997) Chiricahua Scouts 1886, 1990 oil on board 14 x 18 inches 20.75 x 24.75 inches (frame) signed lower left: Tom Lovell, NAWA 1990 verso: titled, signed and dated; artist's text Tom Lovell, a renowned illustrator in New York City turned painter of Western themes, was celebrated for his meticulous attention to detail, completing only a few major oil paintings annually. Born in New York City and educated in Nutley, New Jersey, Lovell graduated as valedictorian, foreshadowing his later focus on the American West. After earning a BFA from Syracuse University in 1931, he enjoyed a distinguished 39-year career as a freelance illustrator for magazines such as Colliers and National Geographic. In 1975, Lovell relocated to Santa Fe, New Mexico, joining the Cowboy Artists of America and focusing on historical Western subjects. His achievements include being the first artist to twice win the Prix de West from the National Academy of Western Art, induction into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame in 1974 and receiving lifetime achievement awards from the National Academy of Western Art and the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in 1992. “ Chiricahua Scouts, 1886. The U.S. Cavalry, sometimes numbering 5,000 troops, tried unsuccessfully to capture Geronimo. Finally, with the aid of Chiricahua scouts this was accomplished. As a disgraceful climax, these very scouts were rounded up with other Apache hostiles and sent to Florida as prisoners of war. They were separated from their families, contrary to promises made by Gen. Miles. Here we see two Chiricahua scouts pausing for a drink of water. They carry Springfield .45-70 rifles, McClellan saddles and other U.S. gear that were truly ‘army surplus’ in 1886”. -Tom Lovell
