Morris Louis Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1912 - d. 1962

Morris Louis Bernstein (November 28, 1912 – September 7, 1962), known professionally as Morris Louis, was an American painter. During the 1950s he became one of the earliest exponents of Color Field painting. While living in Washington, D.C., Louis, along with Kenneth Noland and other Washington painters, formed an art movement that is known today as the Washington Color School.

From 1929 to 1933, he studied at the Maryland Institute of Fine and Applied Arts (now Maryland Institute College of Art) on a scholarship[citation needed], but left shortly before completing the program. Louis worked at various odd jobs to support himself while painting, and in 1935 was president of the Baltimore Artists' Association. From 1936 to 1940, he lived in New York City and worked in the easel division of the Works Progress Administration Federal Art Project[citation needed]. During this period, he knew Arshile Gorky, David Alfaro Siqueiros, and Jack Tworkov. He also dropped his last name.

Morris Louis (1912–1962) was an American abstract painter associated with the Color Field movement, known for his innovative use of acrylic paint and his pioneering exploration of color and form in painting.Born Morris Louis Bernstein in Baltimore, Maryland, Louis initially pursued a career as a window decorator and graphic artist before turning to painting full-time in the late 1940s. He was largely self-taught as an artist and developed his distinctive style through experimentation and exploration.Louis's breakthrough came in the late 1950s and early 1960s when he began creating his iconic "Veil" and "Stripe" series. These paintings were characterized by their large expanses of vibrant color applied in thin washes to unprimed canvas, creating luminous and ethereal compositions that seemed to float weightlessly in space.Louis's innovative technique involved pouring thinned acrylic paint directly onto the canvas, allowing it to soak into the fabric and create translucent layers of color. He would then manipulate the canvas to control the flow and direction of the paint, resulting in dynamic and unpredictable compositions that celebrated the materiality of paint and the act of painting itself.Louis's work was influenced by the Color Field theories of artists such as Helen Frankenthaler and Kenneth Noland, as well as by his interest in the spiritual and transcendental qualities of color. He saw color as a primary means of expression and sought to create paintings that evoked emotional and sensory responses in viewers.Louis's paintings received widespread acclaim during his lifetime, and he was recognized as one of the leading figures of the Color Field movement. His work has been exhibited in major museums and galleries around the world, and his influence can be seen in the work of subsequent generations of abstract painters.Morris Louis's legacy as an artist is marked by his groundbreaking contributions to abstract painting and his relentless pursuit of innovation and experimentation. He remains celebrated for his bold use of color, his mastery of technique, and his profound exploration of the relationship between color, form, and perception in painting.

Morris Louis (1912–1962) was an American abstract expressionist painter known for his pioneering work in color field painting. Alongside artists like Helen Frankenthaler and Kenneth Noland, Louis was instrumental in developing this style, which emphasized large expanses of vibrant color and flat surfaces devoid of traditional brushwork.Born Morris Louis Bernstein in Baltimore, Maryland, Louis began his artistic career as a traditional painter before embracing abstraction in the late 1940s and early 1950s. He was deeply influenced by the work of European modernists, particularly Henri Matisse, as well as by the Color Field painters who emerged in the 1940s and 1950s.Louis's mature style emerged in the late 1950s with his "Veil" and "Stripe" series, in which he poured thinned acrylic paint directly onto unprimed canvas, allowing the colors to soak into the fabric and create luminous, translucent layers. These works were characterized by their bold, saturated hues, and their emphasis on color and form over gesture and texture. One of Louis's most famous works is "Alpha-Pi" (1960), a monumental painting that exemplifies his mastery of color and his innovative approach to composition. In this work, Louis created a shimmering field of overlapping bands of color, producing a mesmerizing effect that seemed to dissolve the boundaries between painting and viewer.Louis's work received widespread acclaim during his lifetime, and he was recognized as one of the leading figures of the Color Field movement. His paintings are held in major museums and collections around the world, and his influence can be seen in the work of subsequent generations of artists.Morris Louis's legacy as a pioneering color field painter endures to this day, and his innovative use of color and form continues to inspire artists and captivate audiences around the world. He remains celebrated for his ability to create luminous, transcendent works of art that evoke a sense of wonder and awe. Measures 40 x 26.5.

The Collection of Sidney Rothberg, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Literature Diane Upright, Morris Louis: The Complete Paintings: A Catalogue Raisonné, Harry N. Abrams, Inc., New York, 1985, no. 36, p. 136 (illustrated). Lot Essay Morris Louis was an American painter associated with the Color Field movement, which emerged in the 1950s and 1960s. Louis is perhaps best known for his Veil and Stripe series, which are characterized by their use of thinned acrylic paint that was poured or stained onto unprimed canvases. These techniques allowed the paint to soak into the fabric, producing luminous, translucent layers of color. One of Louis’s earlier works, Charred Journal (Firewritten Series) from 1951, predates his signature pouring technique but already showcases his interest in experimenting with materials and processes, mark-making and abstraction. For John Elderfield, former Chief Curator of Painting and Sculpture at MoMA, the series reveals “a highly astute, knowledgable artist preoccupied with the problem of fixing emphatically charged imagery onto a demonstrably flat, wafer-thin surface.” In Charred Journal (Firewritten Series), Louis used a blowtorch to burn and char the surface of the canvas, creating a series of intricate, linear patterns reminiscent of calligraphy or ancient scripts. The title suggests a connection to writing or documentation, but the resulting artwork transcends literal interpretation, inviting viewers to engage with its tactile and visual qualities. Like much of Louis's œuvre, Charred Journal reflects his interest in pushing the boundaries of painting and challenging conventional notions of artistic expression. By employing unconventional techniques and materials, Louis sought to capture the essence of color and form in its purest, most elemental state. This unique approach adds an element of surprise and intrigue for those, such as Rothberg, who were interested in exploring the innovative artistic techniques being employed at this time. Overall, Louis's Charred Journal (Firewritten Series) serves as a testament to the artist's innovative spirit and his enduring impact on the evolution of abstract painting in the 20th century.
