Charles A. Lindbergh Signed Pre-Paris Flight First Day Cover Inaugurating Chicago to St. Louis Mail Service

                Est: $600 - $700

Charles A. Lindbergh Signed Pre-Paris Flight First Day Cover Inaugurating Chicago to St. Louis Mail Service A First Day Cover, "First Flight - Inaugurating Chicago - St. Louis - Route Contract Air Mail" signed by aviator Charles A. Lindbergh (1902-1974) as "C.A. Lindbergh" as "Pilot" at lower left. Co-signed by Postmaster William H. Conkling. Dated April 15, 1926. Bearing several hand-stamped cancellations including a handsome circular vignette of Abraham Lincoln at center top labeled "From the Home of Abraham Lincoln." The addressee and return address fields are slightly faded. Expected overall light toning. Letter-opened at right. Minor mounting traces verso. Else near fine. 9.5" x 4.125." This signed First Day Cover predates Lindbergh's celebrity; he became an international sensation after undertaking the first record-breaking solo non-stop transatlantic flight from New York to Paris just a little over a year later, in May 1927. In April 1926, however, he was still "Slim," a rather nondescript Midwestern air mail carrier contracted by Robertson Aircraft Company. Lindbergh delivered mail on the Chicago - St. Louis route, Contract Air Mail Route 2 (stopping over Springfield and Peoria, Illinois) for ten months prior to his historic flight. The combination of Lindbergh's dark signature, the colorful postage stamps, and bold red and blue stripes running horizontally across the envelope make this a superb display piece! This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses. WE PROVIDE IN-HOUSE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE!
