  • Harry Hall,  Mr Payne’s ‘Glauca’ with James Chapple up, winner of the Cesarewitch 1850
    Mar. 12, 2025

Harry Hall,  Mr Payne’s ‘Glauca’ with James Chapple up, winner of the Cesarewitch 1850

    Est: £2,000 - £4,000

Harry Hall, British 1814-1882- Mr Payne’s ‘Glauca’ with James Chapple up, winner of the Cesarewitch 1850; oil on canvas, 59 x 76.8 cm. Provenance: with Pawsey & Payne, London. with Frost and Reed, London [no.41162]. with Hambros Bank Limited, London. Given by Patrick Pagni, then Chief Executive of Hambros Bank Limited, to Sir Chips Keswick (1940-2024) in 1998. Note: Hall was a prominent and prolific equestrian painter, whose portraits of racehorses and their riders were highly sought-after by contemporary horse owners. The information given on this painting about the horse, its owner and jockey are erroneous. Research has instead shown that the jockey is James ‘Jem’ Chapple (1801/2-1858), the horse is a chestnut called Glauca and owned by ‘Mr Payne’, whose colours are listed as ‘Black and white broad stripe, cap the same’ (J. B. Muir, ‘Raciana: or Riders' colours of the royal, foreign, and principal patrons of the British turf from 1762 to 1883 arranged alphabetically…’, 1890, p.104), and the background is the Cesarewitch start at Newmarket. We are grateful to Ilaria Dotti for this information.
