Provenance: Archduchess Sophie of Austria (1805-1872) Thence by decent to the family; Art trade Germany. In 1818, Archduke Johann (1782-1859), a younger brother of Kaiser Franz I, acquired the Brandhof, an old alpine farm dating back to the 13th century, on the Seeberg near Mariazell. He wanted to establish a model farm for Alpine cattle breeding. Initially, Archduke Johann only had the stables extended. It was only when he inherited 200,000 guilders from Albert von Sachsen-Teschen in 1822 that he had the estate extended into a handsome hunting lodge. The estate was also considerably enlarged through acquisitions. The estate was given a hunting lodge, a dining hall and a chapel. In 1829, Archduke Johann finally married his great love Anna Plochl, the daughter of the postmaster of Aussee, in the chapel - after waiting six years for permission from his brother Emperor Franz. The construction work on the Brandhof was completed in 1824 and the court painter Matthäus Loder had captured it in pictures over the years. He drew the buildings, fences, paths, the landscape with trees and the clothing of the figures in meticulous detail. On the occasion of the completion of the construction work, Loder produced a view that was even to be reproduced and distributed for the opening of the house. On the 16th of July 1826 it is documented that the archducal couple Franz Karl and Sophie, came to visit archduke Johann at the Brandhof. This is described in an article in the Grätzer newspaper no .118, dated 25th July 1826 and in a letter exchange between Archduke Johann and Anna Plochl. The collection of the Counts of Meran in Bad Aussee contains a squared pencil sketch (20.5 x 27.9 cm), which was probably the preparatory drawing for the present finished watercolour. The grid of the drawing indicates that it is a preparatory work for an album leaf, as Loder had used this procedure almost exclusively for this purpose. Maria Theresia von Wietersheim-Meran (Von der Ritteridylle zum Bilddokument: Matthäus Loder (1781-1828): ein Kammermaler des Erzherzogs Johann von Österreich, Vienna-Cologne 1989, vol. II, p. 420, WVZ no. 824) describes the sketch as follows: ‘A party has gathered on the meadow in front of the Brandhof. Lanterns and garlands are hung from six spruce trees on the left. Below them stands Archduke Johann, pointing towards the house; next to him stands a gentleman in a top hat and a lady. In the centre, the hunters are obviously waiting with rucksacks and mountain poles, while further to the right the women have gathered in groups. Even the courtyard entrance is decorated with a lantern.’ This watercolour from an album by Archduchess Sophie also shows this scene, eventhough Archduke Johann, who is pointing towards the Brandhof with his arm, can only be recognised as a ‘shadow’ or ‘silhouette’ next to the urban couple on closer inspection. Matthäus Loder probably changed his mind here and painted over the figure further along in the process. Loder finalised his watercolours in winter in Vienna based on sketches made on site. From 1826, the artist used a gold signature to embellish his sheets. Archduke Johann's household accounts show that he paid 220 fl. for ‘2 views of the Brandhof with figures’ in March 1827. In May 1827, Archduke Johann gave the watercolour to his niece Sophie by marriage, who noted this on the album page. Watercolours made by Matthäus Loder on behalf of Archduke Johann only very rarely find their way onto the art market or auction market, as they are, with a few exceptions, in family ownership.
