Carl Ludwig Thilson Locher (1851 - 1915) oil on canvas, Signed Lower Right, Measures ( x inches) w/frame ( x inches) Carl Locher was a Danish realist painter who from an early age became a member of the Skagen Painters*. Locher was born on 21 November 1851 in Flensburg in the Duchy of Schleswig, which was then part of Denmark. From an early age he took an interest in ships and received his first training from his father who painted ship portraits for a living. After the father passed away, Carl continued his business for a short while and went on several voyages with ships of the Royal Danish Navy. Struck by the grandeur of the Atlantic Ocean, voyage to the Danish West Indies made a particular impression on him. Even before he began his studies at the Royal Danish Academy of Art* in 1872, he was encouraged by Holger Drachmann to spend a couple of months in Skagen, the artists colony in the far north of Jutland. He quickly completed paintings of the beach, some with fishing boats or wrecks.

Measurements: 40 x 55 cm; 60 x 74 cm (frame) In this marine by Locher we can appreciate his unmistakable precise and realistic style. The artist proposes an image apparently of great simplicity, as there are few elements in it. It should be noted that the scene seems to be inspired by the swell in Locher's well-known painting "The lifeboat is on its way to rescue a beached ship", in which sailors are rescued. In both paintings the manner in which the waves are depicted is very similar. However, the lack of human presence in this image deprives the scenes of their dramatic aspect and offers the viewer a completely different vision using the same chromatic range based on colours ranging from the dark tones and greys of the sea to the subtle brushstrokes of light creating reflections in the water. Renowned for his naval depictions, Carl Locher revolutionised marine painting in the history of Danish art, as he was able to combine, within the Skagen group of painters, the use of Impressionist contrasts of light and the realistic depictions of the Barbizon school. His training began with the voyages he made with his father on the seas of Greenland and Western India. However, his artistic production came to the fore thanks to his trip to Paris in the 1870s, where he became a pupil of the realist painter Léon Bonnat. Although based in Paris, he travelled regularly to his native Denmark. It was there that he became a member of the group of painters in Skagen, a summer destination in a fishing village, known for being home to an important community of Danish artists. The Skagen group was devoted to plein air painting, mixing the latest trends of Impressionism and the traditions of French realist painting.

Der er mindre variationer hovedsageligt i størrelsen og beskæring. En mindre, signeret version, hvor hovedgruppen er stort set identisk med herværende er dateret 1892. Et af Lochers hovedværker. Seemann, ein Schiffsmast auf den Schultern tragend.Feder in Schwarz und Grau, grau laviert, auf chamoisfarbenen Velin. 45,6 x 31,5 cm. Unten links bezeichnet und datiert: "Skagen 1892". Des Öfteren setzte Locher bei gemalten Strandszenen die kräftige Seemannsfigur ein, die einen Seemast schultert, so beispielsweise in der erst kürzlich auf dem Kunstmarkt erschienenen Ölarbeit "Fischer, auf Skagen an Land gehend" ("Fiskerne går i land på Skagen", Öl auf Leinwand, 88 x 131 cm, Auktionshuset/Hørsholm, Los 181, 17.
