Artist statement:
I tend to idealize the potter’s life – its closeness to nature, its romance with earth, water, wind and fire, its simplicity. I am endlessly impressed with the story from the bible of how God fashioned man out of clay and blew into it the breath of life. What vivid imagery! How apt the metaphor! I see the potter meditatively bent over the turning wheel out of which rises a vessel of clay. That, I tell myself, is how I shall spend the days of my old age, turning out magical pots in some quiet retreat near the mountain, or beside the sea.

Portrait of Barbara Gonzalez terracotta and acrylic 28" x 19" x 12" (71 cm x 48 cm x 30 cm) A feminist artist, Julie Lluch is a self-taught sculptor and one of the leading champions of terracotta art in the Philippines. Lluch and Gonzalez first met when the latter had just accepted the position of Vice President for Coca-Cola. While Gonzalez commissioned Lluch to create a bust of her mother, Lluch insisted on doing a feminine likeness of Gonzalez instead. “Do you want to be portrayed as a grandmother, a mother, a professional, or a woman,” Lluch asked Gonzalez, to which the latter replied, “As a woman, of course.” “And I popped out my right breast because Julie was a woman too. I was not uncomfortable exposing myself at the sitting,” recalls Gonzalez of the moment Lluch began work on the bust. “This bust by Julie Lluch is my tribute to myself. I had it done when I turned 44. My birthday is August 8, 1944, or 8/8/44. The year I turned 44, my birthday was 8/8/88. But that was 34 years ago,” Gonzales gleefully reminisces. (A.M.)
