Ed Little (American, B. 1957) "Santa Claus in His Sleigh" Signed lower left. Original Oil on CanvasBoard. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 29c Santa Claus In His Sleigh stamp issued October 17, 1999. In the early 1800s, America's traditional Christmas time gift-giver was St. Nicholas, a tall, rather stem-looking figure clad in bishop's robes. Brought over to the New World by Dutch settlers, this seasonal character was called Sinterklaas and was aided in his work by a single reindeer. To America's English-speaking children, Sinterklaas became Santa Claus. And as his name changed, Santa's image changed as well. In his Knickerbocker's History of New York, published in 1809, author Washington Irving drew a decidedly different visual picture of Santa Claus. Gone was the stately, patrician look of the original St. Nicholas. In his stead, Irving portrayed a jolly fellow who closely resembled New York's Dutch settlers. Wearing baggy breeches and a broad-billed hat, this pipe-smoking character rode a wagon through the night sky and dropped presents down chimneys as he passed. Clement C. Moore penned his classic Christmas tale in 1822, and in his story Santa's appearance had altered considerably. Clad in a red suit bound with white fur, this chubby Santa slid down chimneys to deliver his toys and drove a sleigh pulled by eight reindeer whose names Moore also immortalized: "Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen! On, Comet! On, Cupid! On, Donner and Blitzen! " Image Size: 27.25 x 37.75 in. Overall Size: 30 x 40 in. Unframed. (B13550)

Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 29c Santa Claus Waving In Front Of Chimney stamp issued October 17, 1999. According to Clement C. Moore's fictional Christmas Eve encounter with St. Nick, commonly entitled "The Night Before Christmas," the droll, chubby elf known as Santa Claus likes to enter and exit houses via the chimney. Laying aside their natural skepticism at the feasibility of such a feat, Americans have accepted this unusual habit as a matter of fact for nearly two centuries. If Santa can deliver presents to houses all over the world during the course of one night, they reason, then sliding his ample personage down a narrow chimney must be relatively easy. While Santa Claus as a character is Yankee to the core, some of his habits have European origins. Santa's peculiar mode of entry has Scandinavian roots, evolving from an old Norse legend which maintained that the goddess Hertha's appearance in the fireplace brought the home and its occupants good luck. Across the Atlantic in the United States, the legend replaced Hertha with Santa Claus, whose yearly dispensation of bounty is for many believers the ultimate indication of good fortune. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 25c South Dakota Statehood stamp issued May 23, 1989. South Dakota sits halfway between the nation's coasts, and halfway between the North Pole and the equator. However, the state is located to the north of America's main travel arteries, and South Dakota is regarded by the many people who don't know it as a mysterious, rugged, frontier state unchanged from the romantic and sometimes bloody ways of days past. A youthful state, South Dakota lacks the long history of the eastern states, the four-hundred-year-old Spanish traditions of the southwestern states, and the well-established Native American culture of other parts of the country -- even South Dakota's Sioux tribes are relative newcomers to the Northern Plains. The first Sioux and the French explorers arrived in the area during the eighteenth century. The nineteenth century brought the Lewis and Clark expedition, fur trade, the gold rush to the Black Hills, Indian uprisings, and the birth of the cattle industry. It also brought heavier settlement around the turn of the century, primarily by German and Scandinavian immigrants, the official end of Indian resistance, and statehood. South Dakota was admitted to the Union as the fortieth state on November 2, 1889, and since then has seen continued population growth, agricultural development, and an expansion of education, culture and the arts. These changes have ushered the South Dakota of the old West into modern times and made it a contemporary western state -- and an integral part of one of the most powerful nations in the world. This painting is the original paining which was published on the Fleetwood Maximum Card for the U.S. 25c Christmas Tree stamp issued October 18, 1990. If the celebration of the birth of Christ were compacted into one year, the tradition of the Christmas Tree would be but days old. Though the exact date of origin is disputed, it is widely recognized that the Christmas Tree is a German invention dating roughly from the 16th or 17th centuries. Early legend has it that the first Christmas tree was cut down by Martin Luther and decorated with candles to represent the star-filled Holy Night in Bethlehem. German immigrants brought their ways -- including the Christmas Tree as a holiday tradition -- to the New World. Today, the Christmas Tree is the centerpiece of Christmas celebrations across the nation, and can take on many sizes and shapes: from giant saguaro cactus in sunny, dry Arizona to rich, green fir trees in the snow-frosted New England states or modernistic trees. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 25c Christmas Tree stamp issued October 18, 1990. "Dear Editor: I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says 'If you see it in the Sun, it's so.' Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus? Virginia O'Hanlon." This letter appeared in the now-defunct New York Sun almost one hundred years ago. Today, it stands as the most memorable letter-to-the-editor ever written. Equally famous is the reply, written in a Sun editorial on September 21, 1897 by Francis Pharcellus Church: "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! How dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias.... No Santa Claus! Thank God, he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood." Indeed, the legend of Santa Claus has survived the sharp scrutiny of generations of youngsters, beginning in the 4th century with Saint Nicholas, bishop of Myra, Lycia, and continuing to present day. Today, Ol' Saint Nick remains as much a part of Christmas as gift-giving, love, Christmas trees. Image Size: 17.5 x 15.5 in. Overall Size: 25.25 x 20 in. Unframed. (B12517)

This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 29c Santa Claus stamp issued October 17, 1999. "His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples -- how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!" in 1822 Clement C. Moore wrote a charming Yuletide story especially for his children. Originally titled "A Visit from Saint Nicholas," the entrancing story came to be called "The Night Before Christmas." In poetic style, the saga humorously chronicled Moore's fictional encounter with Santa Claus and gave many readers their first portrait of the "jolly old elf." The mythology surrounding this fabled fellow dates back to 300 A.D. and centers on Saint Nicholas, bishop of Myra in Lycia, who under cover of night took gifts to the needy. Nicholas' fame spread after his death, and many European countries began to celebrate December 6 -- his feast day -- with joyful revelry, the exchange of gifts and sumptuous repasts. Dutch settlers brought the custom to the New World during the 17th century. St. Nicholas, or Sinterklaas as Dutch children called him, was originally pictured as a tall, slender man of stately demeanor. But in America his appearance -- and his name -- changed. Sinterklass became Santa Claus, and with the help of American educator and poet Clement Moore, the saint evolved into a round, jolly elf with rosy cheeks, a white mane of flowing hair and a long beard. Ed Little (American, B. 1957) "Washington State" Signed lower left. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 25c Washington Statehood stamp issued February 22, 1989. The earliest written history of Washington state, located in the northwest corner of the continental United States, is contained in the records of the first Spanish, British, and American explorers, some purportedly dated as early as 1592. These records laid the groundwork for later disputes over territorial rights in the Pacific Northwest. The first real settlers, however, were the fur traders and missionaries who came to the Northwest beginning in the early 1800's to pursue their livelihood. Later, with the discovery of gold in the northeastern part of the territory in 1855, came a flood of prospectors. Local tribes, increasingly concerned about the fate of their hunting grounds, did not welcome the influx, and the late 1850's were marked by intermittent wars. The rapid settlement of eastern Washington contributed to the annexation of parts of the territory to the new Territory of Idaho. By 1863, the permanent boundaries of the future state of Washington were fixed, except for a few minor adjustments concerning the San Juan Islands. Because of its remoteness, the region experienced slow population growth until the coming of the railroad in 1883 which was accompanied by rapid development. During the Civil War, enthusiasm for statehood in the Washington Territory was strong, but close to twelve more years would pass before Washington became the forty-second of the United States on November 11, 1889. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 29c Santa Claus Going Down Chimney stamp issued October 17, 1999. "As I drew in my head, and was turning around, Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound." Clement Moore's classic Christmas story is a timeless tale which merrily captures the joyful spirit of the holiday season. The mythological figure of Santa Claus incorporates legends and fables from many European countries, but he originally evolved from St. Nicholas, a bishop of the early Christian church. For many centuries, December 6 -- the anniversary of Nicholas' death -- was celebrated with feasting and merrymaking throughout Europe. After the Protestant Reformation, St. Nicholas was replaced as the center of festivities by Christkindli -- the Christ Child. Derivations of the name produced Kris Kringle, a ministering spirit who presented gifts at Christmas time. England's Queen Victoria revived St. Nicholas festivities when she married a German prince, Albert. In this incarnation St. Nicholas emerged as Father Christmas, who delivered presents to good children. In America, Santa Claus is strictly a Christmas Eve visitor who arrives by way of the chimney, places gifts under trees, stuffs stockings with toys and eats goodies left by grateful children. This beautiful and moving symbol caught on and soon became a tradition, with German immigrants bringing their ways -- including the Christmas Tree as a holiday tradition -- to the New World. In 1856, the first White House Christmas Tree was decorated by U.S. President Franklin Pierce. Once the Christmas Tree found its way into the nation's most prominent home, the moving image rapidly spread, becoming a Christmas tradition in nearly every home across the nation, dazzling all who gazed upon its beauty. France and Great Britain adopted the tradition in the 1840s; Queen Victoria kept a tree at Windsor Castle during the holidays. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 25c Madonna & Child stamp issued October 18, 1990. The Virgin Mary was long relegated to obscurity by Christian fathers who wanted to insure that her presence would not overshadow Christ. For centuries after the birth of Christ, Mary was depicted as a stern, austere figure whose primary function was to call attention to her child as the Son of God. Her warmth and tenderness -- indeed, her most basic human qualities -- were largely ignored until the 14th century. In the 1300's, the celebration of Christmas began to move away from Church control. Peasants who could not read or understand the Latin hymns introduced songs of their own into the liturgy, with melodies based on dance rhythms and words sung in their native tongues. These simple people, craving an intermediary for their petitions to God, perceived Mary as someone who was like them and would be sympathetic to their needs and desires. St. Francis of Assisi found a way to make Mary and her son even more real to the people: he built the first cr?che scene of the Nativity, which was overwhelmingly popular. Medieval sculptors, painters and cathedral makers exalted the Mother of God, until the simple Nazarene girl was almost lost amid the elaborateness of the art that glorified her. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 29c Santa Claus Placing Gifts stamp issued October 17, 1999. Each year at Christmas time, people scurry from small shops to department stores, seeking the perfect Christmas gifts for their loved ones. This generous, sometimes costly tradition is rooted in ancient Biblical history. The three magi, eastern kings following the Star of Bethlehem to the stable where Jesus was born, presented gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the newly-born Christ Child. These wise men thus laid the foundation for one of Christmas' most delightful traditions. Although adherence to the custom waxed and waned during the Dark and early Middle Ages, gift-giving was a common practice by the 12th century, especially among the royalty and nobles. Under the onus of feudalism, most lords presented their retinues and vassals with gifts of money. But their own gift exchanges were often lavish, ostentatious and exotic -- such as the elephant which the King of France gave England's Henry III in 1236. America's Santa Claus is a sprightly soul and the holidays ultimate gift-giver. Operating from a list of requests compiled during the year, Santa knows exactly what each child -- and adult -- has yearned for, and he stuffs each stocking with loving care and piles mounds of packages under the tree. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was featured on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 29c Santa Checking His List stamp issue of October 17, 1991. "He's making a list, checking it twice; gonna find out who's naughty or nice. Santa Claus is coming to town." During the Christmas season, this popular song can be heard over the radio, in elevators and shopping malls across America. Holiday traditions in the United States have their own unique characteristics. And Santa Claus -- so dear to the hearts of the nation's children -- is truly an American original. Developed as a character during the early 19th century, Santa Claus doffed his saintly attributes and assumed more secular, non-religious attributes. He came to personify the joyful Yuletide qualities of kindness, generosity and cheerfulness of spirit which everyone regardless of faith -- could relate to. Like England's Father Christmas, Santa Claus delivers presents to children on Christmas Eve, but he keeps a list of their requests and leaves gifts only for good boys and girls. Bad children received only lumps of coal. Thus, as the holiday approaches, many parents humorously remind their youngsters to behave -- because Santa is watching and checking his list!
