Scene from the iconographic cycle of the story of Adam and Eve, told in chapters 2 and 3 of Genesis in the Old Testament. Eve stands, resting against the tree, holding the apple of original sin in her right hand and bringing her left hand to her chest as she slightly leans her head in a gesture of heaviness because she repents for the sin she has just committed. Adam begs for forgiveness with his look, as he raises his left hand. The scene depicts the shame of Adam and Eve, who cover themselves with leaves to hide themselves from God’s eyes.

Attributed to Antônio Francisco Lisboa, "Aleijadinho". (Brazil, 1730/1738 - 1814) "Our Lady of Mount Carmel with the souls in Purgatory". Carved and polychromed cedar wood relief. 88 x 132 x 25 cm. A series of relevant characteristics has led us to attribute this magnificent relief to the greatest exponent of Brazilian baroque sculpture of the late 18th century. The wood used is red cedar, which is striking. Stylistically, we also find many of the characteristics that Aleijadinho uses in his images, which are so particular, such as almond shaped eyes, the habitual wide space between the eyebrows, which are curved, joined with the small and rather turned-up nose. The structure of the composition is also characteristic, at time his compositions seem to move towards cubism, and so is the treatment of the folds of Mary’s clothing in this sculpture. If one compares the set of souls in purgatory in this relief to the one Aleijadinho made in stone to decorate the portico of Sao Miguel e Almas en Ouro Prêto, there is a striking resemblance as we have identified some of the same characters in this relief.
