(1891 Druskininkai/Litauen - 1973 Capri) nach "Homme à la guitare"/"Man with a Guitar". H. 92 cm. After Jacques Lipchitz (1891 - 1973). Contemporary, posthumous marble cast sculpture after the original limestone sculpture in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

- Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.

- Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.

It was officially authorized by the Prime Minister's 25th Anniversary Committee to commemorate the founding of the free state of Israel on May 14, 1948. The design was used to create a silver salver that was produced in an edition of several hundred before the mint, the George Washington Mint, was disbanded and production ceased. A handful of porcelain casts were made from the original clay model. They were not for sale and were given by Reese Palley, owner of the mint, as gifts.

Note: The subject of the Bull and Condor was introduced to Lipchitz through conversation with the Spanish poet Juan Larrea in the early 1930s. Larrea has recalled seeing fiestas in Peru where a battle between a Condor and Bull would be created by lashing the two animals together. Lipchitz identified this struggle between beasts, as much as those who enjoyed the spectacle, as symbolising Europe’s depressing decline into Nazism during the 1930s. Condition: Good condition. All become part of one another. The guitar is also the torso of the man and the man’s legs are those of the chair. This is another step forward in curvilinear organization, building on the pattern of Coco Chanel’s andirons. J. Lipchitz with H.H. Arnason, My life in Sculpture, The Viking Press, New York, 1972, p. 70 This terracotta sculpture by Jacques Lipchitz is a paradigmatic example of his Cubist research applied to three-dimensionality. In this work, the human figure, seated with a guitar in his hands, appears fragmented into essential, angular geometric forms, in line with the Cubist principles of decomposition and reconstruction of reality. Lipchitz, who has been associated with Cubism since the 1910s, masterfully translates the pictorial language of Picasso and Braque into the sculptural medium, maintaining the focus on the geometric decomposition of form and the interrelation between solids and voids. In this three-dimensional translation of Cubism, Lipchitz does not merely re-propose the analytical fragmentation of volumes, but sensitively explores the multiplicity of viewpoints, giving his works a visual depth that goes beyond the mere reproduction of the Cubist movement in painting. The broken lines of the figure seem to vibrate, evoking the rhythm and melody of the music itself, thus creating a correspondence between the language of sound and plastic, in an interplay of forms that becomes an expression of music and movement.
