Attributed to John Linnell (1792-1882). Couple admiring the round tower at Bruce Castle

    Est: £200 - £300

Attributed to John Linnell (1792-1882). Couple admiring the round tower at Bruce Castle * Attributed to John Linnell (1792-1882). Couple admiring the crenellated round tower at Bruce Castle, Tottenham, London, oil on board, depicting a lady and gentleman walking down a path beside a picket fence, whilst admiring the round tower, modern manuscript attribution label to verso, 22.5 x 17.5 cm (8 7/8 x 7 ins), modern painted moulded frame 27 x 22 cm QTY: (1) NOTE: The painting depicts the Tudor brick tower, part of Bruce Castle, Tottenham, London, constructed in 1514 from locally made bricks. Sir William Compton (1482-1528), Groom of the Stool and a royal favourite of Henry VIII, was Lord of the manor and during his upgrades of Bruce Castle added this tower to the estate. The original use of the tower is unknown, but suggestions have been made that it was possibly a hawks’ mews (a home for keeping hawks for hunting) or part of a structure supplying water to the house.

Circle of John Linnell,  A pair of portraits

    Est: £300 - £400

Circle of John Linnell,  British 1792-1882-  A pair of portraits: Portrait of a gentleman, half-length, seated at a desk, with his hand on an open book; and Portrait of a lady, half-length, seated, wearing a black dress with a pink bow and a white bonnet with green ribbons;  oils on paper laid down on millboard, each bears label for 'Winsor & Newton' verso, each 28 x 20.2 cm., a pair (2), (unframed).  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  The present works recall Linnell's portraits, particularly in their close attention to detail, evident in the artist's delicate treatment of the sitters' hair and features, which are sharply illuminated against their dark backgrounds. Indeed, similar works by Linnell include his portraits of Augustus Wall Callcott (1779-1844) at the Yale Centre for British Art [B1981.25.423] and Sir Robert Peel (1788–1850) in the McLean Museum and Art Gallery [1977.943], whilst the female sitter also resembles his portraits of Mrs Anne Hawkins in the Tate [N01112], and Mrs Boyles, which sold at Roseberys on 19 July 2023 (lot 216).

John Linnell,  British 1792-1882-  Portrait of the Reverend Charles Gower Boyles, half-length, wearing clerical dress;  oil on panel, signed 'J Linnell. f' (upper left), bears old inscribed labels on the reverse, one reading 'Rev. Charles Gower Boyles / son of Admiral Boyles + / Mary Boyles Eldest daughter / of Capt James Hawker RN. / She was born 1764 + died 1857 / Charles G Boyles Rector of Buriton Hants / 1829 to 1845 died May 30th 1845', 32.3 x 24.5 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Literature:  David Linnell, 'The Life of John Linnell', Sussex, 1994, p.378, no.177.  Note:  Linnell painted this portrait of Revered Boyles of Buriton, near Petersfield, Hants, in 1832 (D. Linnell, no.177). The artist's portrait of the mother of the present sitter, a Mrs Boyles (D. Linnell, no.178) was sold at Roseberys, London on 19 July 2023 for £3,200.  Although now perhaps best-known for his dramatic and atmospheric landscapes, typically of the English countryside, Linnell initially established a reputation as a portraitist, and it is from his portraits that much of his fortune derived. The present work exhibits the tendencies which define Linnell's output in this realm, including the loose brushstrokes with which he evokes the fabric of the sitter's clothing, alongside the kindly expression and demeanour which he imparts to his subject. Linnell trained first under the eminent history painter Benjamin West (1738-1820), and then with John Varley (1778-1842). He was also closely associated with the artist Edward Thomas Daniell (1804-1842) and William Blake (1757-1827), to whom he acted as a close friend and patron.

John Linnell British, (1792-1882) Gateshead Windmill, 1843 oil on canvas Signed and dated lower right. Two small spots where paint has worn away. The Little Gallery, IN label verso. Biography from the Archives of askART: John Linnell (June 16, 1792 - January 20, 1882) was an English landscape and portrait painter and engraver.* Linnell was a naturalist and a rival to John Constable. He had a taste for Northern European art of the Renaissance*, particularly Albrecht Dürer. He also associated with William Blake, to whom he introduced Samuel Palmer and others of the Ancients. Linnell was born in Bloomsbury, London. His father was a carver and gilder and Linnell was brought into contact with artists from an early age, and was drawing and selling portraits in chalk and pencil at the age of 10. His first artistic instruction was received from Benjamin West, and he spent a year in the house of John Varley the water-colour painter, where he had William Hunt and William Mulready as fellow-pupils, and made the acquaintance of Shelley, Godwin and other men of mark. In 1805 he was admitted a student of the Royal Academy of Arts, London8, where he obtained medals for drawing, modelling and sculpture. He was trained as an engraver, and executed a transcript of Varley's Burial of Saul. In later life he occupied himself with the burin*, publishing, in 1834, a series of outlines from Michelangelo's frescoes in the Sistine Chapel, and, in 1840, superintending the issue of a selection of plates from the pictures in Buckingham Palace, one of them, a Titian landscape, which he engraved in mezzotint*. At first he supported himself mainly by miniature painting and execution of larger portraits, such as the likenesses of Mulready, Richard Whately, Peel and Thomas Carlyle. Several of his portraits he engraved in line and mezzotint. He painted many subjects such as the St John Preaching, the Covenant of Abraham, and the Journey to Emmaus, in which, while the landscape is usually prominent the figures are of sufficient importance to supply the title of the work. But it is mainly in connexion with paintings of pure landscapes that his name is known. His works commonly deal with some scene of typical uneventful English landscape, which is made impressive by a gorgeous effect of sunrise or sunset. They are full of true poetic feeling, and are rich and glowing in colour. Linnell commanded large prices for his pictures, and about 1850 he purchased a property at Redhill, Surrey, where he lived till his death on 20 January 1882, painting with unabated powers until within the last few years of his life. He devoted himself to painting landscapes notably of the North Downs and Kentish Weald. His leisure was occupied with a study of the Bible in the original, and he published several pamphlets and treatises of Biblical criticism. Linnell was one of the best friends and kindest patrons of William Blake. He gave him the two largest commissions he received for single series of designs—£150 for drawings and engravings of The Inventions to the Book of Job, and a like sum for those illustrative of Dante Aligheri. He was a friend of the painter Edward Thomas Daniell. A blue plaque commemorates Linnell at Old Wyldes' at North End, Hampstead. The plaque mentions that William Blake stayed with Linnell as his guest.

  • John Linnell,  Portrait of Mrs Boyles, seated half-length, wearing a bonnet

John Linnell,  Portrait of Mrs Boyles, seated half-length, wearing a bonnet

    Est: £3,000 - £5,000

John Linnell,  British 1792-1882-  Portrait of Mrs Boyles, seated half-length, wearing a bonnet;  oil on panel, signed and dated 'J. Linnell / 1832' (lower left), bears old indistinctly inscribed label 'Portrait of Mrs Boyles Jan. 1832 / Painted by John Linnell / ...' on the reverse, 33.2 x 25.1 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Literature:  David Linnell, 'The Life of John Linnell', Sussex, 1994, p.378, no.178.  Note:  Linnell is recorded as having painted The Rev. C. G. Boyles of Buriton, near Petersfield, Hants in 1832 (D. Linnell, no.177), who is the son of the present sitter. A pencil drawing of Mrs Boyles by Linnell sold at Chiswick Auctions, 3 October 2018, lot 97 (part).  Although now perhaps best-known for his dramatic and atmospheric landscapes, typically of the English countryside, Linnell initially established a reputation as a portraitist, and it is from his portraits that much of his fortune derived. The present work exhibits the tendencies which define Linnell's output in this realm, including the loose brushstrokes with which he evokes the fabric of the sitter's shawl, alongside the kindly expression and demeanour which he imparts to his subject.  Linnell trained first under the eminent history painter Benjamin West (1738-1820), and then with John Varley (1778-1842). He was also closely associated with the artist Edward Thomas Daniell (1804-1842) and William Blake (1757-1827), to whom he acted as close a friend and patron.

ATTRIBUTED TO JOHN LINNELL,  BRITISH 1792-1882-  HARVESTING IN A STORMY LANDSCAPE;  OIL ON CANVAS,

    Est: £1,000 - £1,500

Attributed to John Linnell,  British 1792-1882-  Harvesting in a stormy landscape;  oil on canvas, 71.5 x 99 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  The present lot is probably the work listed in D. Linnell, 'The Life of John Linnell', 1994, p.371, no.337 (b): "The Coming Storm - Replica with variations 'Storm' 28 x 39 in. Sold to Fox White", painted in 1873. It is possibly related, too, to Linnell's 'Storm in Harvest', also dated 1873 and with 'Fox White', which sold at Christie's, London, 7 June 2007, lot 102 (£57,600).  Linnell is one of the central figures of English romanticism. He was a close friend of William Blake (1757-1827), and was father-in-law to Samuel Palmer (1805-1881). With them he shared an appreciation of the divine presence in nature, the earth's fecundity, and man's powerlessness when confronted with natural forces. He acquired a small estate in Surrey in the 1850s, and many of his landscapes celebrate the Surrey Weald.
