Property from a Bluffton, SC Private Collection Description: Charles Linford (PA/NJ. 1846-1897) Landscape, Oil on Canvas, signed lower left, depicting a pathway to a river with trees, in a giltwood frame. Frame size: 17 1/2 in. x 22 1/4 in. Charles Linford was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and was a student of noted Scalp Level founder, George Hetzel. It was through Hetzel that he was admitted to the 'Gillespie Group', a local group of notable Pittsburgh artists that included George Hetzel, Alfred S. Wall, Joseph Woodwell, David Gilmore Blythe, and Jasper Lawman. Linford was also a member of George HetzelÕs summer gatherings at Scalp Level. In 1877, he moved to Philadelphia where he exhibited his works at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts until 1893. He lived for a short while in New York City and exhibited at the National Academy of Design. After 1893, Linford split his time between Pittsburgh, New York and Plainfield, New Jersey. He also exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago and the first Carnegie Institute International in 1896. From the estate Benjamin Franklin Hammond, PhD. Dr. Hammond was "an emeritus professor of microbiology in University of Pennsylvania's School of Dental Medicine and the schools former associate dean of academic affairs" (source: University of Pennsylvania's Almanac).

Charles Linford, American, Pennsylvania/New Jersey (1846 - 1897), "Forest Landscape," oil on canvas, signed lower left, bears a label on the verso from Wunderlich Bros. Gallery in Pittsburgh, measures 18 x 26 inches unframed, 30.50 x 39 inches framed in a massive, period Barbizon frame. CONDITION: Good, slightly dirty, would benefit from a cleaning, small knock to surface at upper right. Born in Pittsburgh, as a young painter he was a member of the "Gillespie Group," which was a loose collection of artists, including George Hetzel, Alfred S. Wall, Joseph R. Woodwell, David Gilmore Blythe and Jasper Lawman. Charles Linford concentrated mainly on landscapes and a majority of Linford's work shows the influence of the French Barbizon painters whom he admired and tended to follow in color and treatment. Specifically, his favorite subject was that of birch trees within a fall landscape. He exhibited every year from 1876 to 1891, with the exception of 1879, 1881 and 1886, at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts' Annual Exhibition. After his time in Philadelphia, Linford divided his time between Pittsburgh, New York and Plainfield, New Jersey. In 1890, he lived in New York and exhibited at the National Academy of Design where he had also exhibited in 1878 and 1879. Linford's works were included in the private collections of Andrew L. Carnegie and C. H. Wolfe.
