Two of these particular pieces appeared on pages 70-71 of the 2003 March/April issue of Decorating magazine, Better Homes and Gardens publication. Artist Bio: Maya Ying Lin was born on October 5, 1959 in Athens, Ohio. Her parents immigrated to the United States in the late 1940s, and found jobs at Ohio University. Maya’s father was a ceramist and dean of the university’s College of Fine Arts. Her mother was a professor of literature. While at Athens High School, Maya took classes at Ohio University and learned how to cast bronze. After high school, she attended Yale University and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1981 and a Master of Architecture in 1986. Maya first received national recognition when she won the design competition for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. She was only 21 at the time, and she received much criticism at first. But this memorial has been ranked in the top 10 of America’s favorite Architecture. It has also become an important pilgrimage site for the families of fallen soldiers. Maya spent much of her time at Yale devoted to environmental activism, with much of her later work focused on the relationship people have with their environment. This can be seen in her many earthworks, sculptures, and installations. Maya’s installations and designs can be found all across the United States and internationally. She created Wave Field for the University of Michigan and designed a new plaza for the University of California, Irvine. She has an outdoor sculpture at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, and designed a building for the Museum of Chinese in America. She also has several works displayed along the Vegas Strip. Maya has received honorary doctorate degrees from Yale, Harvard and Smith College. She has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the National Woman’s Hall of Fame. She has also received the National Medal of Arts and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, both from President Barack Obama. Seats: 15" heights, 27" lengths; table: 10.5" height, 41.5" length

MAYA LIN (b. 1959): ECLIPTIC (1999) Satin burnished bronze, 1999, initialed 'MSL', dated and numbered 7/30. Note: Chinese-American artist and architect Maya Lin is perhaps best known as the designer of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Lin won the commission through a public design competition at the age of only 21, but her plans and her ethnicity were controversial, forcing her to defend her design in front of Congress which lead to a conceptual compromise. Lin added a bronze statue of soldiers with an American flag to the otherwise non-traditional design of the memorial. Lin's studio art draws from the same inspirations as her architectural designs. Through her organic shapes, Lin explores ideas of technology, beauty and the transcendental, giving us new ways of seeing and experiencing our landscape.
