Peter Liew (b. 1955) Ulu Langat, Sungai Congkak, 2008

Known for working en plein-air, Peter Liew paints in gestural strokes with thick impasto layers applied by palette knife and brush which creates dynamic movement. He taught at the Malaysian Institute of Art from 1981 to 1994, after receiving his Diploma of Fine Art there in 1979 (awarded Best Student in 1978). Peter Liew (b. 1955) Untitled, 1997

        Est: RM8,000 - RM14,000

Peter Liew's deep interest in travel is reflected in his distinctive impressions of the landscape. This work reveals the artist's unique technique, whereby broad strokes of paint were applied vigorously though the palette knife, creating a feeling of movement. He painted a picturesque view of a fishing village and boats on a river with a contrast between the trees that have enshrouded the skies. The landscape with reflections on the calm surface of the water are applied in a fresh palette of verdant green hues. Peter Liew was educated at the Malaysian Institute of Art (MIA, 1976-1979, Best Student 1978), where he taught from 1981 to 1994. His other works revolve around old architecture, quaysides and recently, landscape portraits. He had several solos since his first at Art House Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, in 1981, including in Art Expo Malaysia and a solo in Skopje, Macedonia, in 2002, after being invited to the art colony in Debrca, Belchrista and Macedonia in 2000. Est: RM12,000 - RM24,000

The Malacca Series represents one of the early successes of Peter Liew in his paintings of landscapes and the panorama. There is also the rawness of his strokes where he cut and sculpted the paintings with his palette knife, and his palette of sombre colours that marked his impecunious state when starting and painting fulltime again in October 1994. The Malacca Series is in his major exhibition in Journey Into Landscape, complete with a catalogue, at Galeri Maybank in 1997. He plays on the chiaroscuro with a little spot of colour of houses by the river. A traveller artist, Peter Liew has travelled all over for his intrinsic impressions of the landscapes: the United States, New Zealand, China, Vietnam, Europe, Macedonia, Turkey, Russia… Peter Liew was educated at the Malaysian Institute of Art (MIA, 1976-1979, Best Student 1978), where he taught from 1981 to 1994. Peter Liew (b. 1955) Ipoh Mountain 1, 2001

        Est: RM70,000 - RM130,000

Nature, even in its natural unkempt state, has its intrinsic beauty. This little alcove with a small lake near the limestone hill quarries of Ipoh, still retains much of its greenery, untouched by development or as prevalent in the area, quarrying. It was also a tin-mining area. As is wont of Peter Liew's landscapes, there's a nice play of reflection from the early-morning light amidst the vibrations of different tonal greens. Though a Perak (Tapah-born) boy, Peter Liew set out from his Kuala Lumpur home on the day of the painting excursion, having marked out this secluded spot which delighted the painter's heart. The whole composition was mapped out, on palette knife, alfresco, with a touch of romanticism, and now nostalgia, as it has changed. His impeccable skill is shown in this masterpiece. Peter Liew, an internationally much travelled artist dubbed the Poet of the Panorama, had just returned from Ankara, Turkey, where he was selected for a cultural exchange by the university there. He had painted landscapes all over, often operating alone - Europe, the United States, Asia and Oceania. He studied at the Malaysian Institute of Art (MIA), where he graduated in 1979, and lectured at his alma mater until 1993. Peter Liew was given a Retrospective at Wisma Kebudayaan Soka Gakkai Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, from July 28 to Sept 10, 2018 (extended). Among other things, he had an artist's residency in Debrca, Belchrista and Macedonia in 2000, and a solo in Skopje, Macedonia, in 2002.

It has a 12-lane bowling alley, a two-tiered 32-bay driving range and a putting green, a tennis court, a basketball badminton courts and swimming pools, but there is also the Bukit Kiara Sports Complex nearby. It is surrounded by verdant greens with a reverse ‘S' river meandering across it. Its precincts are out of bounds to non-members like the adjacent Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club. But there are lots of hiking, jogging and walking tracks free for the general public, not only for the residents of the affluent Taman Tun Dr Ismail neighbourhood. It's also popular with mountain-bikers. Peter Liew (b. Perak, 1955) Flower Still Life, 1978

        Est: RM14,000 - RM24,000

This is an early Peter Liew, done in 1978 the year he was awarded Best Student at the Malaysian Institute of Art (MIA) and a year before he graduated. It was a hastily self-assembled still life of flowers, notably chrysanthemum within the MIA premises, and executed with brush, unlike say, a 2007 still life piece, Untitled, which was sold at the Henry Butcher May 6, 2012 auction and was done with the palette knife with stabbing abstract strokes. This early work was executed the normal way, with an eye to the play of light, elements of harmony and colour contrasts, but in such subdued tones bordering on femininity, of yellow and pink. As if commenting on his frugal days, the flowers are shown in throes of withering as evident by some dropped petals on the table where the vase is stood. It is a soft colour palette that Peter Liew abandoned in his later works of darker chiaroscuro and with rough-hewn veneer. The sense of impermanence and innocence is latent. Still life of flowers have been used as a subject since the Netherlandish Renaissance artists (c. 1500s-1600s). After his graduation, Peter Liew taught at his alma-mater from 1981 until 1993. On his own in 1994, he started using palette knife and achieved some success in his break-through solo exhibition at Galeri Maybank in 1997 although he first painted in palette knife in 1981. A traveller artist dubbed the Poet of the Panorama, Peter Liew has eked a reputation for his spectacular alfresco landscapes in his travels all around the world. His notable canvases also cover old architecture, quaysides, and ‘landscape’ portraits. Peter Liew’s auction record, of RM72,600, for Golden Malacca (1997) was set at Henry Butcher’s inaugural auction on Aug 8, 2010.

The streets, the windows and the buildings are lined with thick, heavy impastos – so thick and so real that it beckons the viewer to touch it, for it seems as if the painting is three dimensional and real to touch. This is the impression that Peter Liew’s artworks leave. His alfresco paintings have a realness feel to it, not only because of the rich and colourful impastos he assimilates them with, but also because he captures the depth of lighting, the contours and the atmosphere so well in this painting of a morning market. The light is hushed, as if the sun is about to set and nightfall awaits. Peter Liew obtained his Diploma from the Malaysian Institute of Art in 1979 and began lecuring there for twelve years before channeling his full concentration towards being a full-time artist. He is notably known for his scooped-up-and-spread thick impastos, often painting natural landscapes. Peter has his own ateliers in Penang and Kuala Lumpur.

The Malacca Series is in his major exhibition in Journey Into Landscape, complete with a catalogue, at Galeri Maybank in 1997. He plays on the chiaroscuro with a little spot of colour in the furrows of stilt houses by the river. What is afoot and what stirs amidst the darkened rows? A traveller artist, Peter Liew has travelled all over for his intrinsic impressions of the landscapes: the United States, New Zealand, China, Vietnam, Europe, Macedonia, Turkey, Russia… Peter Liew was educated at the Malaysian Institute of Art (MIA, 1976-1979, Best Student 1978), where he taught from 1981 to 1994. His other works revolve around old architecture, quaysides and recently, landscape portraits. He has several solos since his first at Art House Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, in 1981, including in Art Expo Malaysia and a solo in Skopje, Macedonia, in 2002, after invited to the art colony in Debrca, Belchrista and Macedonia in 2000. His recent solos were held at National Art Gallery Malaysia & Wisma Kebudayaan Soka Gakkai Malaysia.

An intricate network of canals wending through towering ghoulish buildings casting its shadows on the activities below, as gondolas jostle with motorized vaporetta and other kinds of boats in transporting locals, tourists and goods. In certain areas, the harsh sunlight filters through the interstices of buildings but for most there is a pall of dark shadows. This is one of the places painted by Peter Liew in his nearly month-long stay in Venice in 2012. It is just behind the San Marco Square near where he was billeted on a holiday cum work schedule. Altogether, he painted some 19 pieces of Venice all over. Venice is beautiful with its motley collection of Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance architecture. Peter Liew keeps up a busy schedule painting landscapes and cityscales all over the world. This year, he has been to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, Moscow in Russia, and China. He taught at the Malaysian Institute of Art from 1981-1994, after receiving his Diploma of Fine Art there in 1979 (he was awarded Best Student in 1978). Templer Park is a favourite landscape subject for Peter Liew in his early days. Just 30 minutes’ drive out of the Kuala Lumpur city centre, park is surrounded by jungle and the Templer’s Golf Course. Bukit Takun, a limestone outcrop sitting on a granite base (Pussey Key) with a cliff standing 300m tall, is used for abseiling and rock-climbing, while the area is a spot for jungle trekking and bird-watching. Nearby are the Kanching Waterfalls and the Rainforest Retreat sanctuary. Under azure-blue skies, the light exudes crisp reflection on the water’s edge with just the right shadows in areas of the trees and grass ledge. Peter Liew has been called the ‘Poet of the Panorama’ for his large natural landscapes of Asia, Europe, the United States and Oceania although he has moved away from a green palette to urbanscapes, quaysides and more recently, ‘landscape’ portraits. The Bukit Kiara Valley Park where the privately-owned Bukit Kiara Equestrian & Country Resort (BKECR) is located is one of the largest green lungs in Kuala Lumpur. The BKECR boasts of its equestrian and polo facilities suited for international showjumping and dressage competitions, apart from the clubhouse dining and recreational convenience. It has a 12-lane bowling alley, a two-tiered 32-bay driving range and a putting green, a tennis court, a basketball badminton courts and swimming pools, but there is also the Bukit Kiara Sports Complex nearby. It is surrounded by verdant greens with a reverse ‘S’ river meandering across it. Its precincts are out of bounds to non-members like the adjacent Kuala Lumpur Golf Club. But there are lots of hiking, jogging and walking tracks free for the general public, not only for the residents of the affluent Taman Tun Dr Ismail neighbourhood. It’s also popular with mountain-bikers. PETER LIEW (b. 1955) PENANG CLOCK TOWER, 1994, Oil on canvas

        Est: RM6,000 - RM10,000

From early on in his career, Peter Liew paints in two bifurcating strands of Panoramic Landscapes and Architectural Heritage, first using the brushes and later the palette knife. Basically an alfresco painter, his process evolves and matured in concept, philosophy, style, colours, technique and treatment. For artists painting the landmark Moorish-design Penang Clock Tower or Victoria Memorial Tower at the junction of Light Street and Beach Street, it’s normal for them to take the whole totem standing by itself in resplendent glory. Peter Liew prefers to show its height towering over all the adjacent buildings in the financial hub of Penang, the only contender to it being the ghostly-white Komtar in the distant, near the left side of the painting. What can be seen of the 30-metre high structure built between 1987 and 1902, is the domed cupola with roman pillars, the second four-sided tier of the four working clocks, from her working station on the Beach Street front. But had Peter Liew painted the clock tower today, he might want to take it with its whole structure because of the addition of the fountain with the 4.8-metre high metal Betel Nut sculpture. Betel nut is Buah Pinang in Malay, and it is from here that Penang, Pulau Pinang, derived its name. But he has done one close-up in 1995, but by then he had started working on the mean palette knife. It was the same year he painted one at least on the Malacca Clock Tower.Peter Liew has been called the ‘Poet of the Panorama’ for his large natural landscapes in Asia, Europe, the United States and Oceania. He taught at the Malaysian Institute of Art from 1981-1994, after receiving his Diploma of Fine Art there in 1979 (He was awarded Best Student in 1978). He has come a long, long way since his first solo at Art House Gallery, Kuala Lumpur in 1981, but he started making an impact in his solo at Galeri Seni Maybank in 1997.

Peter Liew is regarded the 'Poet of the Panorama,' travelling all over the world to capture the 'local' colours, spirit, 'taste' (atmosphere) and terrain. He paints alfresco in oils with palette knife, with instinctive and clever manupulations in bringing out the essence of more than just the physical. This work was done in Dunedin in the South Island when on a trip with fellow artists Alex Ong and Teh Yew Kiang to New Zealand in 1996. He painted seven works in two weeks there. After receiving a Diploma in Fine Art in 1979 at the Malaysian Institute of Art, Peter Liew taught there in 1981-94.

Designed by Arthur Charles Alfred Norman and built in 1894 to 1897, the building which is named after the reigning Sultan at the time housed the Federal Secretariat of the then-Federated Malay States formed in 1896 during the British administration. Inspired by Muslim mosques in India and having spent some time in Africa, the architect adopted elements of the Mughal architecture in its design.
