        Feb. 06, 2024

Original Vintage Poster On The Job For Victory by Jonas Lie c1917 WWI

        Est: $1,200 - $1,800

A busy shipyard chugs away efficiently in this WWI poster. It was commissioned by the Emergency Fleet Corporation (EFC). The EFC was founded in 1917 by the United States Shipping Board (USSB), which was established while the United States was at peace to try to restore the nation's Merchant Marine ship supply. After the entry of the U.S. into WWI, the function of the USSB changed radically, becoming a military agency that maintained the line of communication between America and Europe. Jonas Lie (1880 -1940) was a Norwegian-born American painter and illustrator. He is most wellknown for his Expressionist style paintings of New York, but he also importantly documented the building of the Panama Canal. This experience likely helped inform his accurate depiction of this poster's busy shipyard. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

        Jonas Lie (1880-1940) American

        Est: $3,500 - $4,500

Jonas Lie (1880-1940) oil on canvas board, signed lower right, measures 7.5 x 11.5 and 11 x 15 inches w/ frame. Artist became one of the best-known American landscape painters in his lifetime. (2) When he arrived in New York at the age of 13, he got an American education and art training. Although he took an active part in Norwegian-American activities, he was regarded as an American artist even though most American publications mention that he is Norwegian-born. His Norwegian background meant a lot to him. He visited the country of his birth several times and worked as a bridge builder between his native and adopted country. Like Ole Bull in the nineteenth century, he contributed to putting Norway on the map in America.

JONAS LIE Fishing Boats. Oil on canvas, circa 1919. 555x665 mm; 22x26 inches. Signed in oil, lower left recto. Provenance: Adamson/Duvannes Galleries, Los Angeles, with the label; private collection, Arizona; Shannon's Fine Art Auctioneer's, Milford, Connecticut, April 26, 2018, lot 12; private collection, New York. Exhibited "Summer Exhibition of Paintings", Museum of History, Science and Art, Los Angeles, July 1-September 30, 1919, with the label. Lie (1880-1940) was a Norwegian-born American painter and teacher. He often depicted the sea, channels, and ships with dramatic perspective and powerful use of color. Lie became known for colorful impressionistic scenes of harbors and coves, painted during the many summers he spent on the coasts of New England and Canada. Throughout his prolific career he painted brilliantly colored images of the rocky coves and harbors that identify the region's dramatic shoreline. Lie painted a landscape mural in honor of his wife, Sonia, in the sanctuary of the First Unitarian Society of Plainfield, New Jersey in 1929. It is inscribed, "I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills." Paintings by Lie are held in public collections throughout the United States, including at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, Salt Lake City; the Phoenix Art Museum; the San Diego Museum of Art; the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Brooklyn Museum of Art; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the High Museum of Art, Atlanta; and the Detroit Institute of Arts.
