    Est: £200 - £300

Chinese politicians and diplomats, late Qing Dynasty, c.1880s-1901 Chinese politicians and diplomats, late Qing Dynasty, c.1880s-1901 PORTRAITS OF CHINESE POLITICIANS AND THINKERS, late Qing Dynasty (1644-1912), c.1880s-1901, including one albumen print of Kang Youwei (1858-1927), and three cabinet cards of Li Hongzhang (1823-1901), his nephew and adopted son Li Jinfang (1855-1934), and the marquis Zeng Jize (1823-1890), photographers include L. F. Fisle (xx), John Thomson (1837-1921), and Alexander Bassano (1829-1913), completed with two handwritten notes in ink, one in English by J. S. Rowland (xx), 1886 and one in Chinese written by Zeng Jie. Albumen print, image size, 260 x 200mm, with pencil annotations verso, cabinet cards (3), image size, approx. 155 x 105mm, 130 x 195mm, card size, 166 x 110mm, one examples dated and titled in ink card verso, two with photographer name typed card verso, one signed in English and Chinese by Zeng Jize recto, two with photographer's name in card lower margin and in annotations. Footnote: Kang Youwei (1858-1927) was a political thinker and reformer during the last years of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). Together with Liang Qichao (1873-1929), Kang was a supporter of constitutional monarchy and strongly believed that the Chinese empire needed modernisation and restauration in similar ways of the Meiji court in Japan. After the first Sino-Japanese war (1894-1895), both Kang and Liang took part in the reformation campaign known as the Hundred Days' Reform or Wuxu Reform (11 June - 22 September 1898), a failed 103-day cultural, political, and educational reform movement undertaken by the emperor Guangxu. However, a coup d'état, aka the Wuxu Coup, was perpetrated by conservative opponents led by Empress Dowager Cixi (1835-1908). Subsequently, Kang and the rest of the reform-oriented political class was arrested and sentenced to death. Kang managed to flee, then travelled the world to promote his idea to remove Cixi from the throne to the Chinese diaspora communities. With the end of the Empire and the fall of the Qing dynasty, in 1917, he launched a failed new coup, which aimed to restore the Qing dynasty with the Emperor Puyi. After this failed attempt, Kang abandoned China and moved to the American legation. He died at his home in the city of Qingdao, Shandong in 1927. In this picture we see him wearing the dragon robe Jifu, Guanxu period (1875-1908), which was normally worn by the emperor, his immediate family, and members of the imperial administration. Li Hongzhang (1823-1901) was a politician and diplomat during the later Qing dynasty. He is known for his pro-modernisation ideas and his antagonism towards the British and the Japanese, especially after the first Sino-Japanese war (25 July 1894 – 17 April 1895). He is also known for stopping the Taiping Rebellion (1850-1864), civil war between the Manchu Qing dynasty and the Han. In 1901, Li was capture during the Boxer rebellion (1899-1901) in Beijing, where he signed a document declaring the end of the rebellion. He died two months later.
