A wonderful lithograph on paper by French artist Andre Lhote depicting a reclining nude woman surrounded by patterened fabrics, all rendered in a Cubist style. Size of paper: 15" W x 11.25" H (38.1 cm x 28.6 cm) About the artist: "Lhote's artistic training was grounded in decorative arts, which he pursued at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in his native Bordeaux from 1898 to 1906, before turning his full attention to painting. He moved to Paris in 1906 and immediately began submitting work to the Salon d'Automne and Salon des Artistes Independants. Initially influenced by Paul Gauguin, Paul Cezanne, and the Fauves, by 1910 Lhote had gravitated toward Cubist artists, among them Fernand Leger, Albert Gleizes, and Jean Metzinger. At the 1911 Salon d'Automne, Lhote's large-scale Port of Bordeaux (1911; private collection), a harbor scene that was typical subject matter for the artist, hung alongside Cubist paintings by those artists. This large-scale composition was acquired from the artist at the time of the exhibition by the Swedish painter, collector, and friend of the artist Georg Pauli. Two years later, Pauli organized a one-man show of Lhote's work in Stockholm. In 1912 Lhote joined Section d'Or (also known as the Puteaux Group, 191214), a short-lived association of Cubist artists spearheaded by brothers Jacques Villon and Raymond Duchamp-Villon. Lhote's paintings were included in the association's large group exhibition, Salon de la Section d'Or, which was held at Galerie de la Boetie in Paris from October 1030, 1912. After World War I, Lhote gained the attention of Leonce Rosenberg and became one of the artists the dealer promoted during the early 1920s. Lhote also contributed to the development of Cubism through theoretical writing and art criticism. His texts appeared regularly in the prestigious periodical La nouvelle revue francaise (1909present) until 1940. He also taught at the Academie Notre-Dame des Champs (19181922) and beginning in 1922 at his own Academie Andre Lhote. Although little is known about Lhote as a collector, the artist owned at least one Cubist work, a drawing by Georges Braque, Still Life with Dice (1911; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Promised Gift from the Leonard A. Looking out at us with a self-confidently calm gaze, we see the painter Marguerite Hayet (1898-1978), André Lhote’s wife. In 1909, the same year they were married, Lhote painted her twice in one portrait: on the left, his wife is seated on a sofa and, on the right, there is a portrait of the painter – as a picture within a picture. Compositionally, they are handled in almost the same manner: formed out of large fields of colour and pressed up close against the edges of the picture. In terms of colour, he has made a distinction between his wife and the painter. While, on the left, he has selected warm tones of red and brown for Marguerite, she appears on the right in a pink dress in front of a steel-blue or green background. Through the mediation of the critic Joseph Granié, both artists received a grant to stay at the Villa Medici Libre in the Norman village of Orgeville in the following year, 1910. The present double portrait represents an early cubist picture by the artist, who worked not just as a painter but also as a teacher and theorist. After going to the major Cézanne exhibition in Paris in 1907, he developed a highly expressive version of cubism that is primarily realised in the faces here.

He was also active and influential as a teacher and writer on art. Lhote was born in Bordeaux, France, and learned wood carving and sculpture from the age of 12, when his father apprenticed him to a local furniture maker to be trained as a sculptor in wood. He enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux in 1898 and studied decorative sculpture until 1904. Whilst there, he began to paint in his spare time and he left home in 1905, moving into his own studio to devote himself to painting. He was influenced by Gauguin and Cézanne and held his first one-man exhibition at the Galerie Druet in 1910, four years after he had moved to Paris. After initially working in a Fauvist style, Lhote shifted towards Cubism. He was alongside some of the fathers of modern art, including Gleizes, Villon, Duchamp, Metzinger, Picabia and La Fresnaye.

In this piece you can appreciate the tonality of colors typical of Lhote, evoking on numerous occasions green, red and orange colors. In this landscape we can appreciate his passion for cubism and how he captures it in the composition, drawing with the brushstroke. The Picassian style, contemporary in time and place, is present in all his work. The theoretical work of this creator has been fundamental for the understanding of 20th century art. His plastic work goes through several stages, venturing into themes such as landscape, the nude, prostitution, life in the port, the bourgeois woman, among others. In many of these themes, we can appreciate his proximity to Fauvism, his distancing from the nineteenth-century sense of painting, his special imprint in the Spanish art of the twenties and a personal configuration of spaces, which makes geometries a malleable element for his narratives, which make everyday life and the popular world his main interests. After attending the sculpture course at the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux, he entered the world of professional painters. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Indépendants in 1906 and at the Salon d'Automne the following year. He was attracted by Cubism, integrating the Section d'Or. He tried to adapt Cubism to classicism and therefore obtained the adhesion of a large number of amateurs who were frightened by the excessively radical changes, but in his works he denotes the purest academicism. In 1922 he opened an academy to spread his aesthetic thought, acting as an influential pedagogue. His theoretical work had great weight in the central decades of the twentieth century. Among his students were William Klein, Tamara de Lempicka, Lino Spilimbergo, Bertrand Dorny, Marcelle Rivier, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Héctor Sgarbi, Greta Knutson and Robert Wehrlin.
